Had a unknown squeek

Last month when I was in Tenn the truck developed an unknown squeek. It only did it when the motor was cold and would go away after it was warm.
In my experiences that's always been a FEAD bearing going out. Idler pulley or the like.

Well, I got home and it was getting worse. So the other night I pulled the belt and spun everything by hand. Everything felt just fine. I put the belt back on and it was no different.

I though maybe it was a belt misalignment. Everything was good there. So I figured I'd try a little water on each thing to see if it would go away. Get this.. nothing would change the squeek!

I was baffled. So I'm sitting there with the hood open and the engine idling. Just can't pin point it.. but it sounds so clear and loud that it's just gotta be something on the outside of the motor.

I'm just staring at it.. then I see it. There is a little plastic ring on the back side of the damper thats shaking and sorta turning a little.

So today I dug into it. Pulled the damper and sure enough. The "slinger" is cracked in 1/2 and was wallerin around on the damper.

Went to several parts stores and then to the dealership. Parts stores no-go. Dealership wants $160 for a whole new damper which the plastic slinger comes with (snapped onto it) Forget that.. So I used a SS hose clamp. some JB weld, and about 24hrs to let it dry.

This one had me baffled... Just thought I'd share.

Wow! Pics? I'm curious to see "where" exactly this happened.

My truck also has that squeek when cold. I'll have to put it on a lift and check it out.

did the broke piece cause any oil to get out? I'm just curious of what that actually does. Maybe keep contaminants from getting to the rubber seal?

Sorry guys I didn't take any pics. But I will tonight so you can see what I'm talking about.

This ring is all plastic and is snap fitted to the back side of the crank damper. It functions as a slinger. It spins off debris *away from* the front main seal.
It rides very close to the seal and I'm fortunate that it didn't damage the seal.
