well im going to be starting working full time this summer making like 320 a week and since i live at home i will have alot of extra cash to spend. im looking in to what i can do to the 4.0 to get some more power from her. i have a flowmaster original series dumped and a modified air box ( cut a big hole in it) im going to be getting a k and n soon. but im open to all suggestions and ideas just let me know what would be the best to start with. i mean my truck pulls real hard at about 2700 rpms in just about any gear except 5th. but i would like to get as much out of the engine as possible.

Andrew

i see im the first to post in this forum. guess not to many guys have the ohv 4.0

I'm not familiar with the 4.0's but maybe i have a few suggestions.

If they make headers for your application, pick them up, they will give you a few more ponies.

A larger TB combined with maybe a bigger MAF? (These were maf right?)

A cam change might be in order, but keep it mild and computer friendly.

If its affordable maybe purchasing a chip after all your other mods are completed would net you just that little bit of extra HP.
(But it will also cause you to run premium unless you get a dual mode/flip chip.)

Good luck!

Your not alone in this forum, I too have an OHV... No body makes headers for the 98-00's. I have heard that there are "Cats" in the "Y" pipe and that is why it cant be done (my truck was going to be the test truck for JBA but they found that out). I have heard that the headers from 97 work but you have to modify the collectors to make them bolt up to the Y pipe.

Now BBK and Grantelli both make Throttle Bodies and MAF for the OHV, I have seen them but havent bought one yet because I was told that all they do is allow more air so you lose some torque for some HP. Not sure on that though.

A good Intake is allways good. I have an AFE (guys that left K&N to make their own) and my handy *** Dyno told me that it helped.

A good Cat Back is good. Replace all the pipe not just the muffler. And if you can ditch the Cats (I dont know your states laws, cali you would go to Jail) or get High flow cats.

A good Chip helps big time. I have a Jet Chip and really like it. I have heard however that other make better chips like Superchips and Apten

Thats pretty much it until you start diging in to the engine with a Port and Polish, Cam, and such.

Dont over look the little things either. An Electric fan does make a differance on this engine. It frees up something like 13%, I have felt it, its there.

If anybody can think of anything else let me know, I always want More Power!

Of course you could drop in a 5.0..........

2.3L has DIS, 4.0 has EDIS. Wires and plugs are a waste of money, unless something is wrong with what you have. A beater 5.0L Mustang will be cheaper and faster than the money put into your Ranger.

Yeah, and a beater 88 Ranger would have been cheaper than a new one, but he doesn't have one of THOSE, either.

It seems to me like you haven't given any advice to anyone on this board except to say that they shouldn't have or mod a ranger at all. Did you miss the title of the forum when you signed up?

I think he was more pointing out that the Jacobs DIS wouldnt work because the 4.0 has EDIS... Looks to me like he just saved somebody 300bucks

Looks to ME like he was being a snob and telling him to get a CAR if he wants to go fast.

And you don't understand what either one of those are? They are both the same, EDIS or Electronic Direct Ignition System or some call it a Electronic Distributorless Ignition system, either way they are correct. Both the 2.3 and the 4.0 have whats refered to as the EDIS Module on the early EEC4 systems then when they went to EEC5, in 95 on all Ranger/Explorers, the intigrated it into the processor.

Jacob's and MSD both sell a Ignition box for the EDIS system on the Rangers not matter which engine you have. From what I've heard the Jacob's is crap and from what I know the MSD isn't necessary until you have some form of forced induction. Point being, lower the gap on your plugs to .044-.046 and get some AGSF22C or AGSF22PP depending on if you want copper or platinums. Don't waste your money on the boxes for now.

Next most " Beater" 5.0's are well into the $4,000 range if you want one you don't have to work on everyday and you can put a Vortech on your 4.0 and out run one. Then you don't have the added insurance from being a young male, which I assume since you do still live at home. Also your parents are griping because you have a yard full of cars.

From what I gain your not looking to outrun mustangs just pick up your performance. Get the cat-back exhaust, then mass air and throttle body. Don't get headers until you do something internal like a camshaft or ported heads or you really won't notice the gains. Finally round it up with a good chip/flasher. Don't waste your hard earned cash on a JET or HYPERCRAP. Get one from a SCT dealer such as Bamachips or Apten that will tailor the programs on it for your application.

All in all stick with your 4.0, its fun modding something that no one expects you too. How many Mustangs do you see everyday, how many fast 4.0 Rangers?

Later Doug904.

headers JBA make them for the 98-00 or you can use the 97 ones with a little work.

I would get a chip from doug alnog with a gibson cat back and you will be set utill the power bug gets you again.

Last time I checked the site, I was offering heads, rocker arm assemblies and pushrods.

If I remember correctly, that's all you were asking Doug904 about.

Usually, with a little bit of shopping, you can get the other bolt-ons (MAF, TB, headers, etc) as cheaply as I can get them for you.
