My gas mileage ups and downs
98xlt 4x4 4.0L stock gears and tires 3.73 and 29"
I just thought I would share this with all of you.
I bought the truck 2 years ago this month. It had 62,000 miles. Back then I got consistently 18 mpg.
I have seen 20mpg on a few times when I have had the truck. All of the 20mpg have been 100% highway miles. One of the 20mpg was with my body lift.
I added a tonneau cover and it upped it between 18.5 and 19.
I used to run fuel power in it but didn't see too much of a gain. There was some but nothing to get excited about. I don't use it anymore because I am lazy.
Then after the body lift I went to the 33" tsl's and steel wheels. These suckers are very very heavy. 1 of the tires/rims could not be balanced I never found out the exact reason but I think it is prolly a tire/rim combination. With the funky tire I got 12.5mpg. Those days sucked.
When I got a new tire it went up to 14mpg. This didn't last long since soon after my mechanical fan seized. MPG went back down around 12.5mpg. I drove like this for about a month and got sick of such bad mileage. I put on an electrical fan and went back up to about 14.5mpg.
Once again it dropped down since I ended up with a bad TPS. This was 3 or 4 months ago. I started to see tanks dip down in the 10mpg range. That really sucked. So I took the tires off and went back to stock for a few months. I wasn't doing any wheeling because I was so busy and it took me two weeks to figure out the NEW TPS I bought was for the 3.0 not the 4.0. Once I got the TPS fixed I was up to 18mpg again with the stock tires.
I then got a topper. The topper takes away about .5mpg
Up to date. I have the 33's back on I don't have any mechanical or electrical problems. So looking back the best I could do with the 33's on a tank was 14.5mpg.
I now have 4.56's the get up and go is great. The mpg are also great. The first tank got me 15.8mpg and the second got me 16.3mpg. On both of those tanks I did some light wheeling. But was useing 4x4 and spinning the tires. I am sure I can flirt with 17mpg.
I am going to get a tuner in the fall and maybe I will see that 18.5mpg again. Oh how sweet that will be. I love my Ranger.

I keep track of it in a little book I keep in the door. I have only missed maybe 5 tanks in the two years I have had the truck.
I forgot to mention above that my truck now has 95,000miles.
