Please Help
I went on Car-Part.com last night and I seen where Ford made three different PCMs/ECMs for the 2004 Ranger with the a 4.0 and auto trans.
Here's the ID numbers 4L5A-APA, 4L5A-AMA and 4L5A-BCA & BCB
I'm assuming that if the salvage yard sells me the computer and wiring harness off of the same truck then it will work. I don't see how it couldn't. I'm definitely going to test the 2004PCM and wiring harness out while the while it's still in the 2001. It would be horrible if I did the engine swap and it didn't work.
I asked which PCM I needed on RPS and someone PMed me telling me there was a reason that Ford used 3 different computers in 2004, but he never told me why and he also said something about Supercesions. Does anyone know what that means?
For those of you that haven't seen my other threads on this subject ... The main reason I need a 2004 PCM and wiring harness is because I'm using a 2001 4.0 SOHC in a 2004 Ranger and I want to keep the 2004 cluster.
I wish I would have thought about the cluster before I bought the truck. If I can't get this worked out pretty soon, I'm just going to fix the 2001 Edge and keep it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Brian

the PCM's are probably 2wd auto 2wd manual 4wd auto and 4wd manual or something of that sort
find a truck identical to what you are trying to build and see what pcm it has, also, you will need to have PATS programmed at a dealer before you will be able to start it with the new PCM

I think I'm going to just sell the 2001 truck and then take the money to a salvage yard and buy a 2004-2006 Ranger as a doner vehicle.
The only way I could do this conversion with the 2001 Edge is by putting the 2001 cluster in my 2004 Ranger, and I don't want that.

I heard PATS can be a pain. What kind of trouble did you run into with PATS? When you bought your 4.0 SOHC did you buy the PCM and wiring harness with the engine and what was the year of the Ranger that it came out of?

Most of my issues are coming from the 04+ cluster and the 04+ digital odometer.

I was born in 1993.
I will probably do a 2002 1/2 - 2003 4.0 so I don't have to deal with the digital stuff. The only issues I should have is the PATS but I am going to swap in the donors steering column also.

It shouldn't be much different with a 2000. You still won't have to deal with the digital odometer.

righto. i've actually heard it is easier to swap a 98-01 5.0 into a 2000 Ranger than it is to swap a 01+ 4.0 into a 2000 because of fuel stuff, speed sensors, and PATS.
