i'm using the ngk tr6's. theyre a standard copper-core plug. theyre like $7 for 4 plugs at clubplug.net. i personally like em better than the autolite coppers because the autolite heads are black and the ngk's are silver... it makes it easier for me to read the ground strap on the plug, imo.

Perf Plugs
Do the NGK's improve milleage or horsepower any? I found these E3 Performance Plugs that say they will improve mileage and performance significantly. A little pricey. Anyone try em before?

I have had Autolite XP5144's in ran great gas mileage dropped like a rock.
Put in Bosch 4305's ran great gas mileage stayed down, ran great, idled bad.
Now have NGK 7164's will have to see how mileage is. If it stays down back to the MotorCraft plug for sure. Frankly it makes no sense why; although there is something interesting on the NGK site in regards to their plug number 6044 saying it is the "OE" plug replacement with some special tip on it but @ $12.00 each I don't think so.

More research, I must have been born yesterday. The plug listings are all wrong on the NGK site until the 05's for the "E" VIN code engine. They have the correct info listed under the "X" VIN code engine, go figure. Looks like the same is true all over the Internet through year 04. What a joke. Makes sense as your putting in a plug that is too cold. Should have known better on this one from other threads / posts. It's only $$$, time and beat up hands.

I just use autolite dbl platinums every 50-60k miles or so.
They are pretty much identicle to the motorcraft ones..
(I heard autolite makes the motorcraft ones for ford)
An Important thing to remember if you have the 4.0
the 2001+ 4.0 takes a much longer plug than the old pre-2001's
some places WILL give you the wrong plug.
Have them check part numbers for year 2000, and your year (if 2001+ of course)
if they are the same model number dont buy .

its also important to make sure your plug gap is right. if its too small you can lose gas mileage.
the plug gaps arent always right for your application right outta the box; my truck stock calls for a .042" - .046" gap, and the ngk tr6 (colder plugs than stock) were gapped at .035".
I left em at that because i'm running nitrous, but if youre N/A, you'd probably want to regap them.
I think the 4.0 manual calls for gaps like .062"-.067", or something around there.

Im not sure about the iridium, but the platinum 4 I wouldnt recommend. My truck idles a little rougher. It does run well on the highway when warmed up, but definately not worth the big$. I cant speak for everyone, but the gains on "performance" and mpg's dont seem to change much in either direction. Still I wouldnt bother changin plugs unless your tunin up. Its just a hassle to do it for no reason.
