ECU CEL questions.

I pulled my airbags along with my ABS controller, and I will be switching to a new fuel tank so there goes the evap canister. Is it possible through tuning to make the ECU forget that they were even ever there? Id rather not have all these lights on my dash, and if for some reason I do end up getting the truck registered I need for the whole dash to not light up like a christmas tree

The PCM has switches in the calibration that can be set on or off for certain hardware and CELs. I'm not sure what's available in your calibration but my guess is that turning off CELs should not be a problem for a good tuner.

The restraint system and the ABS have their own modules and codes. The PCM is not involved. It should be possible to finagle a way around the dash light problems with a little imagination and a healthy disregard for the law.

Have you tried your speedometer without the ABS? For 98~2000, it won't work without it if the truck was originally equipped with 4WABS.

Nope I dont plan on that being a problem, If need be Ill pick up a GPS that reads mph.

So if some one where to plug into my OBDII port, for say emissions, how would I be able to get rid of the ABS and airbag codes that I would assume would be present? Or how do I fool the computer into thinking they are still working properly?

An aftermarket flash tuner (like an SCT, for instance) cannot access the ABS and airbag codes because they are not stored in the PCM. That requires a dealer tool. It should be possible to wire those two indicators to some other indicator that comes on at start up for a bulb check - hypothetically speaking, of course.

Hmm so if I made friends with someone who had access to a dealers machine I would hypothetically be able to turn off the ABS and Airbag modules?

I thought the modules were already gone and you were trying to get rid of the cluster indicators. I don't remember if the tool has any way to "turn off" the modules.

I did remove the ABS controller under the hood, Im not sure where the Airbag module would be if thats the actual bag or the on off switch under the radio or is it something else? Possible the computer looking thing in front of my shifter for my 5speed?

I guess what Im confused on is how they interact with the PCM. am I correct in thinking that a code reader would be showing some sort of code saying the airbag and ABS are malfunctioning in some shape or form. or is it that since the ABS mondule under the hood is gone that that light is on but no codes are being shown?

That is the Restraints Control Module.

To the best of my knowledge, the PCM doesn't know or care if the 4WABS Module or the Restraints Module are present or if they have any codes stored.

A regular OBDII code reader only accesses the PCM and its codes. The diagnostics for the other vehicle modules can be accessed by using a dealer level tool through the same Data Link Connector as OBDII uses. The difference is that the other modules have their diagnostoc link on a different wire that doesn't go to the PCM. I don't know if the readers used at a state inspection station are sophisticated enough to access the diagnostics for the non-PCM modules.

Ok I guess Ill take out the restraints module and wire up those lights and then see if it passes when the time comes.

on the fuel canister, email doug at bamachips. I took my evap canister out, personally I didn't care about the light because we don't have emissions testing here.

Anyhow I got his tune and magically my check engine light went off and I no longer have codes for the evap canister.

Can you even read the ABS and restraints module from the odbii port?

Not with an ordinary universal OBDII reader at the DLC.
