Most Power and what Mods??

Hello,

For all the people who have modified their 4L Rangers, tell me about your mods and the power your Ranger produced. I know that a tune would be great for these trucks, especially for the shifting alone. Mine shifts so softly I can't even spill my coffee between shifts. So far my plans are:

1.) Drop in filter with the silencer removed ( I don't see any restrictions with the stock setup besides the silencer)

2.) Electric fan--still debating this one

3.) UD pulley(s)--worked on all my Ford Mustangs and I can't see why it wouldn't work here

4.) Exhaust system--this might be a problem since most of my gains with my Mustangs can be attributed to high flow cats and maybe a decent muffler

5.) SCT Tuner--Who do you recommend?? Past experience tells me a Programmer (like a computer) all depends on who's tuning it.

Any 1/4 mile times due to modding would help too.

Thanx,

If you want real power go forced induction.

I think that you have a good start. Im sure that everything you noted will help you out, but the best would be to go supercharged like Trent said.

With that being said, I ran a 10.07 in the 1/8 with my truck. It was stock with 32's, and of course in 4 Lo... hehe.

I'm not going the blower route with the Ranger, I already have one on my Mustang...runs 7.7 in the 1/8th and high 11's in the 1/4 and I know my Ranger won't run that. I'm just looking to add another 30 to 40 hp and more importantly the torque.

I hate the way the truck's tranny slips all the time, Ford programmed my Ranger to drive at the 2000rpm area unless it's in 5th at 60mph. Hopefully the programmer/ tune can properly adjust the converter lock-up. The stock tune is terrible for shift points and converter lock-up schedules.

If you're looking for a fast vehicle, sell your utility truck and buy a sports car. LOL

i have a jet chip and mine and youll prolly see a 30 hp gain at the most with all those things done to it but atleast do some top end work like machined heads and stuff like that. and the 4.0 sohc doesnt make good down low torque so yeah your not gonna win that one lol i havent with my sohc yet.

A tuner is definitely worth it for adjusting the shift points and TC lock ups. I used to struggle to average 14mpg in the city on 84 octane, noe with the tuner I average 16 mpg in the city with ease on 93 octane. The part throttle power increase is noticeable but all the WOT power increases come mostly from the transmission adjustments. My truck now shifts into 5th gear with the TQ locked up at 40mph turning 1400 rpm, the trans is also alot harder to downkick now too.

X 783987349753. It takes a lot of money to mix "fast" and "truck" but there are a few exceptions with the Ranger not being one of them.

Get a screamin demon coil pack to. I dont know what year your truck is but they say not to run it on the sohc but I have it on there and it runs great, and I have an 03 Sohc in my ranger.

I have one as I mentioned. Just looking for some more low end grunt from a decent sized V6 engine. It's a 4L and should have more low end than what Ford gives us.

I already have enough air coming into the engine, so I'll try a pulley and a tune. I know from my previous vehicles that additional timing can help in a big way so I hope it helps with this motor

K&N Sticker is all I did man and i run like 9 flat! Dude these trucks are slow, they perform like dumptrucks......dumptrucks with a loaded bucket! I have done CAI, headers and exhaust and it might might MIGHT do a mid to high 15 second 1/4 time and honestly dude, i would be embarrassed to have bring a vehicle that performs like a dumptruck to a drap strip. There is a 1/8th mile drag strip like 20miles from where i live, its great to watch the mustangs and the camaros and the chargers go down that thing, rippin and snortin ya know? The bad thing is anyone can register there vehicle and unfortunatley they let EVERYONE register and yes, you will see a bone stock pick up truck go down the strip and it takes FOREVER....man how embarrasing....Keep your self respect...Keep your pride...and keep your dumptruck on the jobsite and not the drag strip can i get a x2?

I always take my Mustang to the track, but a little extra performance out of the 4L Ranger would be nice and a programmer will probably help...mostly for transmission tuning. I'll look into a performance valve body since increasing line pressure is not always good for transmission tuning. Some guys on this website got these 4L Rangers to run in the 14's which makes for a fun little truck.

There is a few of us that will race in a "battle of the beaters" this spring and I'm taking my Ranger. This is going to be fun.

As a side note: My Ranger runs allot better and gets better mileage with No Ethanol 91 Shell V-Power gasoline....just thought I'd mention that.

HI!... The 4.0L SOHC responds very well to bolt on mods. My 2007 EC, 4.0L went 15.98E.T bone stock. My mods are the following :

- 4.10 gears ($600 installed)
- Custom fabricated CAI (free)
- Ported TB (free)
- EGR mod (free)
- Electric fan (free, had one from another project)
- Under driven crank pulley ($325 Can)
- X-CAL2 (Tuned by Mike TROYER) (free)
- NX kit (free, already had the kit)

So for less than $1000 (for me) I knocked 1.56 seconds off my 1/4 mile time. With the nitrous I dropped off 2.15 seconds. After those simply mods I've gone 14.42E.T (N/A) and 13.83E.T (on 40H.P shot)

The 4.0L SOHC can handle 400H.P at the flywheel. Upgrade to ARP rod bolts and forged pistons and it can handle much more.

A 14.42 with an NA 4.0 is booking. Is your truck regular or extended cab? My 302 ranger barely runs in the 14's with the same type of bolt ons done to it and your at about the same elevation as I am. I would be curious to hear more about your combo, weight, tires ect.

Ohhh I've been keeping an eye on your Ranger HP Freak. Many of your mods are the same mods the old 5L Mustang crowd once did, including me...I've dropped well over 1 second in my older 5L Mustang with gears, pulleys, CAI, adjusting the fuel pressure, electric fan, and off-road h pipe....and I know many of those mods will apply to my Ranger.

I ran my best times at the same track you race your Ranger at, but I've heard Sparta is currently in receivership.

What brand of electric fan do you recommend? I'll probably get a Bama or Steeda tune and ASP or Steeda pulley. I'll make my own CAI and I have a 4.10 gear in my basement (maybe).

HI!... My truck is a extended cab, 4x2. I'm at full weight. 3600LBS. I just removed the tailgate and spare tire. I run with my mirrors folded in and my passengers side headlight out due to my CAI. I run HOOSIER 315/35/R-17 drag radials on Mustang bullitt 17" X 10.5" rims. I'm running custom Competition Engineering drag shocks in the front and rear. 90/10, 70/30. No front sway bar.

HI!... Ya that's got the local car crowd around here worried about ST. THOMAS closing. I've been told it will be open this year. I'm afraid if it closes it will be permanent. If so I'll be running at MILAN Dragway in the U.S or Grand Bend or TMS.

I highly recommend the 16" or 17' DERALE electric fan. I ran two on my F-150 truck for over 8 years with no problems. They went through mud, snow, cold, heat Etc. Never had a problem. I'm now running one of those original fans on this Ranger now. As for a tune I like MIKE TROYER at Troyer Performance. Mike has been tuning my F-150 drag truck for over ten years and tunes the Ranger now. He specializes in the FORD trucks. I'm running the ASP under driven crank pulley.

Here's a vid of a 13.99E.T run. This run is done with 275/60/R-15 NITTO 555R drag radials. I spun a bit with these.

The rear tires I'm running :

Thanks for posting up the info. I'm glad to see the time slips, i'm a little suprised by the 60 ft time, especially on the NA. Just thought that with the nice rubber out back it would be leavin a little harder. Manual or Auto? I'm just real curious about your setup. And if you ever cross the border to do some runnin at Milan this summer be sure to let me know, i'll meet you down there and we can make some passes.

HI!... Yes it's a auto, 5R55E. The factory stall converter is holding it back currently. I'm going to upgrade to a FUDDLE 3500 stall this year. Also going to build a set of S/S long tube headers and build a custom exhaust. Need to get a new tune and up the jets to a 75H.P shot. Should go a high 13 in N/A trim and a very low 13 with the nitrous.

A stall converter will help as it did with my Mustang, but for a daily driver I would look to upgrading the valve body. Many Mustang guys have had success with a higher stall on a daily driven vehicle but allot of it was due to the tune. A high stall will cause very soft shifts since the loose TQ will absorb the impact, so I installed a performance valve body to help. Simply jacking up the line pressure via the computer will wear out your tranny pump and cause premature tranny life...I've seen people go through that a few times. Many Mustang guys do the J-Mod (4R70W) which involves enlarging the holes in the seperator plate, this way you don't need to buy another valve body....more oil, harder shifts. Is there a home made valve body performace upgrade on a 55R5 tranny?? Or does anyone make a valve body for this tranny??

HI!... Ya not new to the drag racing thing. Been building race cars and performance vehicles for the street for over 20 years. I have a new 5R55E sitting in my garage that will be getting race built by my tranny builder this year. Alto clutches, bands, Sonnax valves, Teflon seals/rings. External fluid line for the slip yoke bushing, custom valve body. The works. The same tranny builder built my race 4R70-W as well that's in my F-150 drag truck. Got a P/I 3500 stall in that and it ran perfect on the street with extremely hard shifts. Will be going with a 4R100 though in the F-150 when the new engine is done with the T-88. A Fuddle 3500 stall should knock about 2 tenths off my 60ft time which should equate to about 3-4 tenths in the 1/4 mile. I'll have to wait and see.

I'm not new to the the racing seen either, and I'm born and raised in Windsor then I moved to Mississauga/ Streetsville. We might actually know eachother?? I did allot of racing out on 3B back in the day.

Your tranny's and converters sound right on par for what's required...I have a PI 3200 TQ in my Mustang. The formula seemed to work perfectly for me. I take my 1/8 mile and multiply it by 1.5832 to get my exact 1/4 mile time. Knocking 2 tenths off my 60ft got me down to 7.7 in the 1/8 multiplied by 1.5832 = 12.19 which is exactly what I run. This summer I hope to be around 11.8

HI!... What years were you running out at 3B? I grew up on Morand ST. just around the corner from 3B. I used to run a "83" Ford Ranger with a modded 351W. Used to hang out with Mike Lampron, (Mustang/GN) Joe Scisson, (MALIBU 427c.i) Franky, (Chevelle) Jerry Arkett, (64 Biscaine) Gil (Chevelle/Mustang) from A1 TIRE. We used to run out there around 92-98, before 3B got shut down. We hung out at the Tim Horton's on Tecumseh RD. and Chandler St.

Your formula doesn't work for me. It's off 2-3 tenths everytime. I use a program called "DRAGMATH" on my PC. It's dead nuts on.
