the end has to be near!! (power steering pump replacement)

alright so after almost a week of work and working on the house i can return to the truck.

To catch everyone up... power steering pump locked up, replaced it, replaced the pulley as it was messed, had to replace the line also as it didnt match the new one and i turned in my core already. so my $49.99 job i was anticipating has tuned into almost $100 thats the way it goes though.

My newest frustration though has now come. I have everything on now and it seems great. go to put on my serpentine belt and it doesnt seem to work right. I had purchased a new belt so i thought maybe i got the wrong one. I went to put the old one on and same thing.

Is there something i could have messed up? maybe with the tensioner or something that now its too tight to get the belt on. Ive never had this problem before so i dont know what could have happened? Any ideas?

Tensioner is on upside down? Really have no idea since you didn't list your truck's specs at all and you don't have a signature listing them. What do you mean it doesn't work right? Won't go on cuz it's too big? too small? You can't figure out how it's supposed to run? Please be more specific.

Here is how to make a signature:

If you know the way the belt is supposed to be on (It should have a diagram on the metal part above the radiator, at least mine does), then you can measure the length of the belt needed by using string and tape and running the string the way the belt is supposed to go, wrap it all the way around, then take if off and measure that length.

Maybe you got a belt for a 4.0 w/o air conditioning and yours has it? Not real sure. I'd say it's that, or you just aren't putting it on quite right, no offense.

none taken. the old and new belts are the same length. well the new one is just a hair longer. its far too big to be a w/o ac belt and the old one was on with ac. i checked the part number and it checks out. as far as putting it on wrong if i knew how that was possible id love for that to be the issue. but mine looks just like the diagram says it should, and theres doesnt seem to be a way to route it different to keep the right sides of the belt on the right type of pulley.

Thank you for your reply

and i assume there is no way to adjust the tensioner so i couldnt have done that. I feel like i have to be doing something wrong but i cant figure out what it could possibly be. Starting to really feel like an idiot though

well i honestly dont know what is going on but now the third time I took it off and put it back on it worked. Now for the bad news... put everything back together and fired it up. sounds good but anytime i turn the wheel the pump growls really loud i guess i get to do this all over again as it sounds like the pump is bad!! oreillys here i come... this whole experiemce has made me never want to shop there again. havent had a good experience at all. ive always used autozone before but oreillys is all that is close now...

Did you fill the pump with power steering fluid? Then check it again after letting the fluid circulate through the system?

Sounds like you have air in the line. Turn the wheel lock to lock a few times and recheck fluid level.
