IIRC, it stands for Differential Pressure Flow EGR. If you go to a Ford Parts Department and ask them for a DPFE sensor for your year Ranger, they'll know what you're talking about (at least, the one I went to did). Be prepared, it cost me about $75.
Oh, one other thing. I had the same code on my truck last fall. Checked under the hood, and the stinkin DPFE sensor had MELTED!!!! Replaced it, and everything was fine. Nobody could tell me why it happened either.

OK as stated above, well done Tracy!, your gonna wanna go get your self a new one. But in advance, get the plastic one because the aluminum one turns to junk faster....plus if your careful you can take the plastic one apart, clean it and then reinstall it if your p0401 CEL ever comes back. Mine costed me $65 from Napa.

If you are shopping at an auto parts store, some of them sell aftermarket DPFE's that are catalogued as "EGR Position Sensors". The name is incorrect because a DPFE is a flowrate sensor - the EGR Position Sensor name is taken from earlier systems that actually had position sensors mounted on top of the EGR.
