03 Exhaust question !!! cats?

Hey guys Im putting a flowmaster 10 dual outlet in front of my passenger rear tire and looked at all the obstructions. On the Y-pipe there seems to be 2 what I hope to be resonators and after that it looks like 2 catalytic converters then the old muffler. I am hoping that I can do something about them in the future perhaps deleting the two and putting one high flow in its place?

Does anybody know if they are just the two cats and resonators on the y-pipe or what I hate power restrictions!

First thing would be to rethink the exhaust coming out in front of the passenger side rear wheel.
Speaking from experience, this will discolor the passenger side wheel over time, just a heads up.

Those are all Cat Converters, no "resonators".
The Ranger exhaust system is tuned to create a lower pressure at the exhaust valves in the mid-range RPM band, this gives a bit more power to rear wheels since crank doesn't use as much power at that time to push out exhaust, it is sucked out by the lower pressure.
Headers are designed/tuned for this as well, they come in low-band, mid-band and high-band RPM ranges, they don't "add" power, just move when the power is available in the RPM range.

"Free Flow" exhaust will reduce power because you will lose the lower pressure, this is where the back pressure myth comes from.
Best to keep exhaust system from heads to Y-pipe as is, that's the tuned part, then use equal or larger pipe from there to the tail pipe, where ever you decide that to be.

A working cat converter can't reduce performance, it isn't possible, a blocked Cat can of course reduce performance by creating back pressure.

Wow that amazes me that my truck has four cats on it... I am really just shocked.. And I keep up on cleaning my rims and tires and will have it out from the body a bit. I was just wondering to get rid of the two after the y-pipe so I could still pass emissions and free up the exhaust and maybe get better mpg but now I am unsure

You probably wouldn't pass visual inspection.
And I think you may have an O2 sensor after the Y-pipe and then another O2 after the rear Cats.
(along with the 2 "upstream" O2's just after the manifolds)

Removing these will cause CEL to be on and you can't even get an inspection with CEL on.
You may be able to add Bungs to keep O2's but each still needs to show "cleaner" exhaust as exhaust travels to the rear or CEL will come on thinking a Cat has failed.
Cats don't effect MPG, they just heat up the exhaust to clean it.

MPG is a function of engine efficiency, power to weight ratio and, of course, driving habits.
Gasoline engines are only about 20% efficient, so $.80 of every dollar you spend on gas goes to heating up the air around the engine.
If you keep engine "in tune" it can be as good as 25%.
Diesel's run at 30%, some as good as 35%

Oh well then. I just think it's rediclious though. I get 18-20 with my driving habits which I am pretty happy with but when I cut out the cat on my firebird last year I gained overall 1-2 better mpg since then and if anything my habbits driving that thing got worse. I think I will just wait till the two after the y-pipe get clogged or work and replace them with one high flow

Cat was defective if that was the case.
Simple fact of it is car makers are after best MPG and performance, same as you.
