Magnaflow cat back exhaust question

Is the muffler a straight flow design?

thay have two styles of mufflers,round is straight flow and the rectangle ones are not, thay have chambers,like a flowmaster!

I almost bought the cat back kit for my truck on Friday but I don't want to loose low end torque with a flow through.

i think the chamber mufflers sound better.

Any sound is better than the straw blowing sound I have now but I dont want to lose torque.

I've got the dual extreme kit on mine. The muffler has a single inlet and dual outlets. No chambers in mine and you can straight through it.

Yup! I kept my stock pipe size, had a delta flow 40 series flowmaster put on with a nice stainless steel 3" tip. Hold on, I will get a pic...

That looks good. I guess most cat back exhausts have a free flow muffler. The reason I really don't want to go to a muffler shop is because they crush bend their piping and I want to be able to remove it if I have to. Usually they cut the flange off of the stock piping and weld onto it so its one long pipe and the only way to get it off is to cut it. I may just get the Magnaflow cat back system and if I notice a major loss in low end torque then I will replace the muffler with something else and keep the mandrel bend piping.

No not all. IMO I really have not noticed any increase or loss from it. The internal passages are SIGNIFICANTLY bigger than the stock after cat. That alone tells me the real bottle neck on a stock ranger exhaust is somewhere upstream. (Cats and/or manifolds)

LOL... I've got plans and they don't include headers. Purty sure I'll be seeing 14s next summer.

Not to thread hijack but can someone inform me why a magnaflow exhaust would result in torque loss? I was under the impression that magnaflow (and borla) increase performance and MPG.

Technicaly... The less the back pressure the easier the flow in/out of the cylinder as the valves open & close.

The problem is that this does not make for the best **torque**

You need a little back pressure for maximum torque at a given rpm. Since nobodys exhaust will be perfect 100% of the time we have a good balance of low end backpressure and top end back pressure.

On my 06 FX4.. I saw *no appreciable* amount of power increase or loss as measured by my calibrated butt-o-meter. This tells me a after cat for the 4.0L really has no effect for power increases.

One thing it does give is the *potential* for top end power. Wether or not I'm actually getting it I don't know because I have'nt measured it.

Also IMO, the exhaust tone was totally worth it.

Someone on here (not long ago) put them on his stock 4.0L Stock cats I think too.. He reported more bottom and mid range.

I'll go out on a limb here... in my experiences with stock motored street cars the cats are the limiters. Usually going to high flow cats (or being evil and gutting them) will give a power increase. Only once did I see a bottom end loss by removing them. And even at that it was'nt much at all. Gained me 3 tenths in the 1/8th though.

^^^LOL... Only problem is removing them will throw codes, I don't know anyone that can reprogram (like that) a computer for a ranger. Although, since the mustang runs this motor as well, I bet our options will increase...

Oh that's not hard to do. Elims or have the rear most 02s turned off in the tune.

But of coarse I'd never recommend someone contributing to our green house "situation".
