And i think it might be from the heads. No coolant under the truck at all anytime... Today when i changed the oil i noticed that unmistakable white residue down the bell housing and on the cats... Explains why no coolant can be found underneath.

Also it looks a little wet in the valley between the heads. No Coolant in oil and engine is not running rough at all... Does not over heat, and Ive been cheaking it every 2 weeks or so and the Rad is not that low less than half a QT of water and the reservoir is empty.

I have a 04 4x4 with SOHC with 60K on it.

Any other Ideas other than Head Gasket.

I think I know your problem I helped another 4.0 SOHC owner with this problem and I had the same problem its an easy fix if you mechanicly inclined, the guy I helped did a write up on it so heres the link

Also whats the easiest way to make sure its the housing. It doesn't look like there is quite as much coolant residue as in the pictures he has... Mine is pretty much strictly in the valley.

 

his was an extreme case mine was the same as yours just some coolent in the valley under the intake manifold, the only way that i know of to check is to put pressure to the system and look and listen for air escaping from the area, I tell you one thing that there is no consistency with this problem the guy that did the write up fixed his truck @ 160,000 miles, mine went @ 90,000, and yours @ 60,000 so most likley this is your problem I havent seen any other cause of coolent under the manifold as long as the upper hose is not leaking.

Depending on which thermo housing you have, you could be looking at upwards of $200. I paid $80 for mine (2 pieces top and bottom), from the dealership, and I also replaced coolant temp sensor etc while I was in there. If you can get it aftermarket, which I tried when mine failed, but couldn't find one here in the islands, I'd say do it. My suggestion would also be to pull your intake manifold, change your manifold gaskets, clean up the valley (if you have any regurgitation) check your vac hoses, Clean and check MAF and MAP sensor, clean the throttle body and ICF, and in general just get all this taken care of when you go into to change the unit.

$150 - $200 including coolent and if you have a shop vac you can just vac out the valley or take the water hose and wash it down, taking the intake manifold off is imo a wasted step. The link I posted has the part numbers you wil need.

mine was 60 at the dealer. if it cost you that much you more than 100 you got ripped off.
took about 2 hours to change out and no more leaking coolant

 

Some units have the sensors built into em. Guy at the dealership quoted a price of $193 for that unit. $80 for upper and lower is what I paid. And I did pull my intake manifold because the slush under my manifold was an inch thick. Pulled the manifold, cleaned the runners and the metal plenum and changed the gaskets. The whole thing took me 3 hours after work.

 

Yeah i went to the dealer yesterday and got a quote on the whole parts list on that site and its about 235 for everything when i go buy it im gonna go in my uniform cause today they sold me my bearings and races for my L/S at list price cause i work at a Chrysler dealer... Plus they are gonna deliver me my parts... I should have taken the job at ford when i had the chance.
