Mods for the biggest Hp gain
Hey guys, Wow what a great site. I love it
I have a 2001 Ranger XLT 4.0L SOHC. I am looking to gain as much horsepower as possible. Currently( Besides cosmetic mods) I have a K&N air intake kit and a Xlerator exhaust(soon to be a Flowmaster 40). I just bought the truck and love it but would love it even more if it had more horses. I have heard and read of under drive pulley systems. Are they worth it? When i am done moding the engine i plan to buy a X-Cal 2 chip. Should i wait to buy the chip or buy that first? I thought i would get the chips lastly because when purchasing the chip you have list the mods that the truck currently has. I am open to any ideas.thnkx

"cat back" means after the last catalytic converter you replace the pipe, muffler, and tip usually.
Basically My Exhaust goes JBA headers to one cat on each exhaust side. Then the pipe from those cats go into 1 cat. That one cat has 2 inlets and 1 outlet. So the 1 outlet to the tail pipe is "cat-back" I then had the outlet pipe, muffler, and tip replaced with 2.5" pipe (over the stock 2"/2.25") and had a Borla Turbo muffler in place of a stock muffler and a Magnaflow 3" tip inplace of the orginal tip.

nitrous!!! most bang for the buck. always there... not so much.. fun.. hell ya!
but i have jba headers and according to the butt dyno i got a lil mid range boost.
once i get caught up on bills and some parts for my bike im going to get the underdrive pully and an E-fan so(and tranny cooler) so around october i will let you know how a 07 4.0 with headers, pully and efan runs at the track.. i still have stock muffler.. not to fond of v6 exhaust.. may put a magnaflow on so its a low sound.
stock i ran 15.6 1/4mile spinning thru 3rd.. thats what i have to compare too..

I've done a few bolt on's now. X-cal, underdrive, e-fan, after cat exhaust, K&N kit.
IMO the underdrive gave the most bang for the buck. X-cal would be second up, e-fan, then exhaust. K&N did give me power but I could'nt tell it from the seat of the pants impression. (I measure torque with autotap via my laptop)
All the stuff I have in place now makes the truck enjoyable to drive everyday. Milage is up to 21 too. (FX4 - 4.10s - stock tires)

I dont understand why in the first few posts, people are arguing about which muffler, mufflers give you hardly any power at all, cold air intakes will give you like, 1 rwhp, a muffler like 3 at most.... the catalytic converters are hindering your performance the most,
i would say catless y pipe, headers to replace stock manifolds, underdrive pulleys, im new to the whole ranger scene but is there any do it yourself computer tuning programs for rangers that you can hook up to the car with a tactrix cable?
