4wd Low gear!!!??? need help
Okay, so as I went into 4 low the other day, and it would not engage. as I did however try(weather a good idea or not) I jiggled the auto gear shift back and forth (not from gear to gear) just as a jiggle. thinking it would engage. My question is why is this becomeing a problem? and is there anything that I can do to save myself some money as far as any repairs that might have to be made

When I bought my truck from the dealership I was told that 4hi is shift on the fly under 50 mph unless it is cold then it is 45mph. As for 4low you have to come to a complete stop and then shift to neutral, the wait then shift to 4low. It does not matter if you are in 2hi or 4hi, you still have to stop and go to neutral. I had a slight problem with this when I bought the truck it would make a loud clunk noise when engaging into 4low, but it was because I was shifting too fast.

Honestly, I don't trust any salesmen. They want a bigger paycheck so they will feed you whatever bs they can to make it happen. The owners manual is a better place to look, at least its a legal document you can use against them.
When mine shifts into 4lo, it sounds and feels like a small hammer engaging the gears. Its very quiet if your rolling just a tad.

from my 2004 Ford Ranger owners manual
shift into 4WD Hi any speed up to 80MPH
wheels must all be turning at same speed (no slipping)
no mention made of temperature
shift into 4WD Lo in automatic transmission in neutral, foot on brake
This can be done from 2WD or 4WD Hi, but the switch passes by the 4WD Hi position on the way to 4WD Lo
it may seem like it takes '5 seconds' to engage, but it is really just a second or two
if you do not have your foot on the brake it will not switch into or out of 4WD Lo

Keep in mind the pvh trucks have a clutch in the t-case to bring the drive line up to speed. Its very similar to the ac clutch.
After everything is spinning, the hubs engage. Nice idea, poor design.

Personally if I know im going to need 4wd I will lock it before I get stuck.
It cant be good for the clutch in the tcase.

I could care less what the oil cap looks like lol. The salesman usually stops trying to "sell" me the vehicle after that. They know they are out classed.
I walked on to the lot, and pointed I want that one. Then began working on the price. At that point they played the v8 card. Needless to say we went on a field trip. Resulting in the price I wanted as the sales men was a tool.
After i bought the truck I stop by for a free car wash and the salesmen bummed money off of me and a ride to McDonald's.

you see when I used to own my own car lot I however was as honest as I could be if I did not know something I would find it out for the customer I had a lot of repeat business that way to word of mouth travels fast but anyhow thats for all the comments and feedback as above I stated that I had been 4 wheelin down at the beach and yes I am glad I put it in as the sand was DEEP and the RUTS were horrible lol and I did more reserch and like one said before with mine you have to stop go into Neutral get on brake and switch to either I however play it safe I go into high first then give it a good couple secs then go on into low if need be again thanks for all comments and feedback
