So....I just bought a 1,000 mile '06 engine for $1,000 and tossed it in. Motor had to come out anyway! Smarter idear for me to do that than spend half that in special tools and still end up with a beat *** teenager driven, sucked in muddy water 4 times engine. lol.
There were recalls on this engine in the Explorer, but just a TSB for the Ranger SOHC 4.0's regarding the early wear on the chain guides and tensioners. 04ish+ engines had that problem 'solved', though they still will eventually wear out, just not as hugely accelerated like the early SOHC's.
