stock exhaust shot?

hey all I got a 2000 Ranger XLT extended cab 4.0 OVH V6 2WD with just under 68k miles on it. Recently I was under the vehicle and noticed that my exhaust system seems to be in pretty poor shape to me as it is extremely rusted. I'm also concerned about the muffler as it looks to me like it has a huge hole in it? I've been noticing lately while driving the vehicle that I get a whiff of gas smell coming in through the passenger window as well.

From the pics I have provide would any of you think its worthwhile to replace? If i did replace it I would probably want something that will allow me to get my same mpg(usually 15) city or better yet improve it. Also I'm not really looking for a loud exhaust.

The exhaust system is fine. That small amount of rust is completely normal, in fact for a 9 year old truck, it looks to be in above average condition. As for the "hole" in the muffler, I cnat really tell. It appears to be just a shroud over the muffler that is seperating. My stock muffler did not look like that, so I cant say for sure. i would still get a new cat-back system though.

thanks for the responses. Yeah I was bit worried to climb under my truck and find what looked like a big hole. Good to find out its none issue and normal.

Anyways at some point in the future I still might decide to get new cat-back system. So far I'm thinking something that has the exhaust coming out the back of the truck would be nice but it might be a bit of a problem with the hitch and spare tire though. Not to mention extra cost being a factor.
