Hey, I searched around the forum and it seems to me my best choice for a muffler for my 03 Edge SuperCab is a magnaflow. I want a pretty loud, deep tone, but I also want performance gains, so that rules out a flowmaster 40. I cant however find a part number and price for just the magnaflow muffler, I can only find the full kit. I just want to buy the muffler and have a shop do custom pipes. this is the full kit:

search "magnaflow muffler" on ebay - you'll find what you want there.

Let us know when you figure out how you are going to hang it - the stock one has the hanger welded on and is a critical hang point for the entire system.

 

I have a flowmaster 40, they you do gain some performance, but not as much as others. If you are going 2.5 in and dual 2.5 out, you will loose all of your low end torque, just an FYI.

Me personally 2.5" in and 2" out (for duals). Some people on here have 2.25 out, but I like my low end for towing so 2" would be more than enough to get some extra power. If you go single out then 2.5 all the way thru would be good, but not any bigger than that...

In general, the smaller it is, the louder it will be; the larger the quieter. Also, generally speaking, the smaller the less back pressure, the larger it is, the more backpressure. See the trade-off? I don't know what the best answer is. I think if you check out the JBA website, they state what size the mufflers are and they use Magnaflow mufflers - that would be a starting point. Personally, I don't want too much louder necessarily, but I would like a deeper, throatier tone - I've been thinking about going with a larger single in, single out muffler - like their 18" or 24" muffler. I still haven't figured how I'm going to hang it though, so it's not a priority right now.

Magnaflow's are not loud.

 

Larger diameter pipes = less back pressure and generally louder/sound better.

Smaller diameter pipes = more back pressure and are generally more quiet and dont sound as good as larger pipes.

If i were you i would run 3" in and 2.5" out, or if you think thats too much then run 2.5" in and 2.25" out.

Since reading up and speaking with a few VERY knowledgeable 4.0 builders about the exhaust on a 4.0, if i were to redo my exhaust it would be 3" in and 2.5" out..

 

hm, Im thinking either a single 2.5" all the way through and turned down, or either 2.5" in and either 2" or 2.25" duals out. I really dont want to lose any low end torque, but I do want a nice sound, what to do, what to do.

 

Well if you have smaller pipes and then put some 3" tips on the end, they act like a megaphone, they will make the truck louder and deeper sounding then just straight out 2: or 2.25" pipes....

 

go with a shorter case muffler.

I personally would suggest a hooker muffler. I have heard alot of good things about them and I know that they flow better than many other mufflers on the market. I am going to be replacing my super 40 flowmaster for a hooker aero chamber or max flow soon. If you are looking for a loud muffler a magnaflow is not that good of a choice, but both hookers that I mentioned above should be louder than the magnaflow. The aero chamber is deeper and the max flow is louder and also sharper, because it is a conventional glass pack.

 

I got magnaflow 2.5 in and 2.5 dual out sounds good!

 

Ok I got it done yesterday in the Bronx, went to a custom muffler shop. I ordered a Flowmaster Super 40 si/si 2.5" 5"x10" muffler and a tip from summit racing and took it down there. They cut the last cat off and made all new pipes for me, had them make the tailpipe come out the corner under the bumper, looks and sounds real sweet, Ill have to get a clip.

 

Yeah we'd like to hear it. Also, what's your impression of the low end tq and power up high?

Well although you made your mind up, I went all 2.5" piping from the headers back and a 3" tip. I felt no back pressure loss at all. I eventually want to get the last cat removed and have a Y pipe made.
