Swap questions

I've got a 94 ranger which came originally with a 4 cyl engine. The previous owner swapped in a V6 but I have no idea what year it came from. Unfortunately the engine has bad rings or something related as it blows out black smoke after a few minutes at idle. I found a complete V6 4.0 out of a 97 ranger minus A/C 3 hours away from me. Would this be a straightforward swap?

My mustang runs rich and it gets on my bumper. This is A LOT of black thick smoke, where you can't see out through the windows if you're inside the cab
