4.0 and the 2.9

Does anyone know what 4.0 parts can transfer to a 2.9. Performance parts like headers, intakes, cams, heads?

I like the 2.9 its the original engine with 255,000 miles and still going strong. I was just thinking about a couple tweeks. If I would swap eninges it would be with a 302. Only one question about that. What transmission would I need that could fit the 302 and the transfer case.

thats impressive miles on a 2.9 with no rebuild... i think there is a A4LD transmission that will work with the 302 and the transfer case but i think you would be better off going with a C-3 tranny

The c5 (83-84) can be made to fit a 5.0 It is a c4 with a different bell houseing and tail shaft. no a4ld is worth converting to v8 and no kits are available therangerstation.com has lots of info on v8 swaps i would sugjest doin research there on our older trucks. Most on this board have newer trucks.

I'm not much of an automatic type. Everything I own and have owned have been manuals.

Sure for enough money you can get anything to work!

Didn't know you were talking 4x4 though, my comprehension skills fade significantly after noon on fridays!

If you stick with the 2.9L.. I'd do a basic overhaul but with the following:

Have the heads ported and put in some hardened exhaust valve seats.

Have a custom cam gound to match the heads

Port out the stock manifolds.. or go with a set of headers that are slightly larger primarys than the exhaust port measures.

Then step the injectors up one range and get a tune for it all. (of better yet a dyno tune)

This is a simplistic approach but very effective if your not seeking higher than stock rpms.

Too many people go waaaay too big on one or two things and wind up being very disappointed with the outcome. Just tweaking stock parts and then a matching tune can net a very good bang for the buck.
