I have always wondered about this.

It doesn't matter. You can go back and forth with modern synthetics with no trouble. I don't know WHY you'd switch back unless you couldn't get your favorite brand of synthetic -- but you can do it. The oils are actually "mixable" now.
That deal about not mixing them goes back to the days of "ester" based synthetics. Mixed with conventional petroleum they had a tendency to "gel". Modern synthetics like Mobil 1 and Amsoil are based on PAO (polyalphaolefin) and they are totally compatible.
Give it not a thought. But I won't use anything but synthetics anymore. My brand of choice is Amsoil but there are several good ones these days.

Amsoil full synthetic transmission fluid smoothed out the 2-3 shift in my 5R44E transmission that I always HATED the "bump" of. I have to really do something wierd now like back off on the throttle at just the right moment to get a bad shift now. I was hoping for less wear, but I was totally blown away at the smoother operation.

Yeah, but would anyone BELIEVE me. I post links generally to what I feel is confirming information if there's a dispute.
The government ran extended wear tests as well on synthetic vs. conventional oils and in all runs the synthetics were so superior they basically said the wear didn't fit their scale! Ford may or may NOT have been straight up in those tests.
Have you noticed that really high performance engines actually SPECIFY synthetic now, like Corvettes and what not? Also, manufacturers are "sensing" oil quality in high end vehicles and telling people when it's probably time to change -- it's never at 3000 miles by the way. More and more oils are becoming "synthetic blends" as well (like the Motorcraft for our trucks) because the synthetics ARE superior -- just more expensive. It makes no sense to use full synthetic, non-hydrocracked oil, if you're going to recycle it every 3k miles.
I know too many folks now who use synthetic with testimonials like my tranny one and so on. The evidence is in and the biggest indication is that one of the MOST VEHEMENT attackers of synthetics at one time, Mobil, is now one of the leading marketers of synthetics and their biggest proponent. Even they are slowly "ratcheting up" the recommended drain intervals on their oils, when at one time they said that was not a good idea.
Seems to me that Mobil must know something. It CAN'T be that Amsoil was too much of a competitor and Mobil had to compete -- their sales don't come close to Mobil.
Zach, I'd believe that the test occured and the results were posted if you can show us. Otherwise, it's heresay evidence, lol.
