hey guys

i have a 02 ranger. every time im at the gas station my truck spits gas out when i go full pressure or medium pressure on the nozzle. I have to fill in gas on the lowest and slowest setting or else it just spits it back out.

any ideas on what could be causing this?

Yes, vent tube that runs next to the filler tube could be clogged.

Just inside the filler neck you should see a hole in the side, that's the vent tube, it allows air out while you are filling the tank, via a separate hose.

Use a small hose and see if you can blow it out(mouth only, never used compressed air you WILL blow off the hoses), could be collapsed, see if you can see/feel it down to the tank.

Since its phase in roughly 1998~2000, ORVR (Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery) has been required by the EPA. Instead of belching a lot of unburned hydrocarbons from the filler neck during refueling events, this system vents most of those vapors to a new, larger carbon canister where they are captured and stored for burning later. If the vapor path from the tank to the canister to atmosphere is restricted, the tank will be difficult to refuel because the traditional fuel filler vent is smaller than it was before ORVR was introduced.

There is a step-by-step troubleshooting procedure in the factory shop manual for poor filling.

Access to the entire fuel/evap system is much better with the bed removed but I'd crawl under with a flashlight and give a quick visual first. There's a small chance that it's something easy and obvious.
