Metal Intake tube.....Sounds better?

Ok well i was told that taking my stock rubber like air tube out and replacing it with an aftermarket stainless steel tude would make my truck sound alittle bit better? Is this true?

well the bigger the tube the more air-flow...they say you'll get a deeper sound

Yeah, you should get more resonance out of a SS steel tube than a plastic tube.

I honestly don't know offhand. You are probably better off buying the whole setup so that you know you are getting everything you need for it to run correctly.

for $29.99 at autozone it is probably just chrome plated or aluminum. doubt it's SS.

Mine is SS from Street Smart Design. Idk if they make them for the older 4.0 or not. I don't even think they offer them for the 3.0 anymore. Fitting issue I think.

www.ssd4u.com was their web site.

EDIT: They have a tube for a 4.0 OHV but it lists for 98-00. Don't know if it'd fit you 96.

FRZN1001C 1998-2000 Ford Ranger and Mazda B 4.0 L OHV; T304 Hand Polished Stainless Steel Intake Tube $98.95

If by better you mean more like a high pitched whining noise as air rushes through a metal tube...then yah!

You will probably get a little more noise from switching over. For $30 I guess it's worth it to find out. But no intake or exhaust is gonna make a V6 sound like a V8.

Yeah i noticed they don't have it listed pre-98. If you went over to TRS you might see why...idk if they changed the intake on the 98 4.0 OHV from the 97 or not. Guessing they did, but TRS would probably have that info.

If you're looking for more of a V8 sound and some more power as well, get a new set of cams.

I've thought about going that route just not so sure about ripping the block apart. OHV means the cam is down in the 'V' of the engine and it uses "pushrods" to contact the rockers which open and close the valves. SOHC means your cams are up over the valves. I would guess yours (winks) are easier to get to than mine or shane's b/c of that but dont kow for sure.

Hmm... I never knew about that, I thought all cams were at the top of the engine until now. Sounds like a bit of work to get to them, and therefore a bit more difficult than adding in an aluminum tube between two plastic parts. Thanks for the info Mike.

It's possible they just used the Civic tubes those places sell. Some people have been known to get them to fit on their trucks. Idk if that's actually what that person did or if this will work on a 4.0 OHV.

There may not actually be a tube like that designed for a 4.0. Check out TRS and see what you can dig up on intakes for the 4.0 OHV.
