was that just timing and fuel? how many count of knock are you getting down low? what kind of fuel is this on? what kind of dyno? why is your power so notchy in the midrange? is the ecu pulling timing or dumping fuel? where is your afr, did you log anything else?

Jp7, I have no answers to any of your questions. These are not my tunes and I have not yet purchased any yet.

I was just trying to compare different vendors.

I tried, bama, henson, and wound up tuning myself. I was never able to surpass Dougs tune for power. I was seeing a 13.2-ish a/f and 26-27 deg of timing through out the 1/4 with his tune.

When I was finished with my tune I had the a/f in the 12.7 area and 28deg of timing. My ETs were nearly identical.

IMO Doug at bama knows his engine tuning. But when it comes to customer service... he treated me as if I didn't exist. That's what in part drove me to just do it myself. So glad I did too.

Nope.

Fred sent me these because I asked about his numbers on what his tunes produce.

Anyone ever ran a Fred tune and a Doug tune? If so which one is better?

I have not run a Fred tune but do run a Doug tune. After studying the graphs that were posted, I can see that Fred's basically adds some power (torque and hp) on the low end. Unless I am missing something, there does not seem to be much difference in the mid-range and upper end. I don't have dyno numbers on Doug's tune but I did do some performance testing before and after and I can tell you there is a definite improvement in performance in the mid and upper range with Doug's tune. I didn't test low end.

I timed 40-70 mph and 50-80 mph full throttle acceleration in 3rd gear with a very accurate stop watch. I did it that way to eliminate variables like wheel spin and shifting gears. The different speeds were to represent mid-range and high end performance. The 87 octane Doug Performance tune was quicker by 0.7 second at 40-70 and 0.45 second at 50-80 compared to stock. The 91 octane Doug Torque tune was quicker by 0.7 second at 40-70 and 1.2 second at 50-80 compared to stock. I ran these 2 to 3 times at the same location to get a valid average.

I also tested the 91 octane Performance tune but it did not give as much improvement in performance as the 91 octane Torque tune but did have the best gas mileage improvement. I think the 91 octane Performance tune needs to go all the way to red-line to get the most out of it. I discussed this with Doug and he agreed. I decided not to run any higher speed tests to verify my speculation because I was already pushing my luck at the speeds I was running.

I can't speak to those guys tune.. however. With 93 octane I was able to increase timing as much as 20deg in the lower rpms. This made a HUGE improvement in low end power. Very very noticable.
The good thing about that too is that the knock sensor works under 4000rpms. So you are pretty safe increasing timing under 4k.

Wish I could.. but my license is limited to vehicles I own. And only two at that.

For me to be a "tuner" I'd have to spend $6000
Besides that.. I'm way to **** about details to ever make any money at it. Shoot.. I spent over 160hrs just messing with the software. That doesn't include road testing time either.

If I ever got into doing that, I'd want to first become a guru at tuning and have my own mustang brand dyno before I'd start charging people to tune.
IMO you really ought to treat people how you want to be treated. I'm all about the highest possible quality and service.

The best I could do is to help anyone who bought thier own license. If anyone does.. my help would always be free.

Regards,
Rich
