My grandmother has a 2005 Lincoln Aviator.

She has the 4.6L V8..

In her owners manual and on the 'gage' cluster, it says "Supreme Fuel" only...

It states in the owner's manual that the reason for this is "optimum performance"...

I was just wondering if it would be safe for her to use regular unleaded?
What could benefits be to running supreme?
Are they worth the extra $.15-$.30 per gallon?

Christian, my mom has a RX330 Lexus and it says the same thing in the manual. She asked the guy at the dealership and he said it really didn't matter but its required. She doesn't ever put supreme and it runs awesome...

 

87 will run just fine. That's why these vehicles have computers. 93 runs the best because it can advance spark the most but you can run 87 all day long and have no problem with it. They have the same problem with the new Hemi and NO ONE runs 93 with how bad they drink gas.

 

 

i would run the 93, prolly get better gas milage, better runing engine, cleaner engine, just better all around. they wouldnt say to run 93 unless it was necessary. run 93. i would hate to go to the dealer cause something went wrong with the engine, then they come to find out it was because you ran 87. warranty voided maybe?

I have the same 4.6L in my 04 F-150, why would it be any different in the Aviator? Mine doesn't say run premium, you should be able to run 87 with no problem.

 

I just looked on the Lincoln site it says it has a 32 valve motor. 32 valves is 4 per cylender DOHC that must be a Mach 1 or 2002 cobra motor not the F-150 motor.

 

if it says premium/supreme then there's a reason...all of your engine componets are set to work off of a particular type of gas and when you get cheap with it your vehicle starts to not like you and you'll end up paying in the long run. Gas type is the one thing that people don't check into until the prices get out of wack and they start to want to skimp on stuff...

With that said, i wouldn't go any lower than 89 if she doesn't want to put the 93 in it and she should alternate between the two until the prices get back to where she's used to. here the prices have dropped 20 cents within 2 days so i'm sure it will everywhere else.

My parents did the same thing for their Infiniti QX4 but the performance was crappy with 89 versus 93. They don't do it with the G35 nor the Vette though...

Her performance as well as mileage will be affected. DO NOT put 87 in there it's not the right stuff for her type of engine.

 

Wow why in the world would they put the cobra motor in a SUV, thats retarded. But if its that 4.6L then you will need to use 93 or at the minimum 89 or equivalent.

 

I kind of thought something werid was up, I know the navigator had a DOHC 5.4 for years, and the expo only had the SOHC. I really think it is the 2004 Mustang MACH 1 motor also the same as the merc maruder, I think the intake is different to make a little more torque for a little less HP. I guess they figure if you can afford any Lincoln you can afford prem gas. It would cost you more $ but if you had to use reg 87 I would put some octane booster in it. I know around here lots of gas stations are out of prem and/or middle grade gas.

If it doesn't have detonation issues running 87 octane, I can't see how it's hurting it at all.

But this is basically the same argument as the guys who are running Bama tuners and want to switch down to the 87 program to save money. The Aviator engine has a sophistocated knock sensor strategy and will run less spark advance with the 87 octane fuel. It almost certainly gets better fuel economy using premium which is more spark tolerant. With the smaller difference (percentage-wise) between regular and premium currently, I suspect that you are not saving any money by running regular in an engine optimized for premium.

Yes, using regular in the Aviator will cost less per tankful, but will it actually cost less per mile? That is is what really matters.

 

If you really don't believe me, just try it. If it's not up to your liking spend 3 dollars on a can of octane booster. Having worked for Ford, GM & now Dodge I have never seen anyone come in because of running a lower octane fuel in their Hemi, GTO, Cobra or anything. The biggest problem with fuel is getting lots of water in it. I can see a pinging problem or something if you're using forced induction. Also with the gas crunch going on again 93 octane isn't neccessarily 93. It could be 89 or 90 and it's sellable. But it's not my vehicle so I can only offer an opinion.

 

My mom just got a 2006 Explorer with the 4.6 in it and we run just regular gas in it...My family farms so we just fill up out at our Barn...It is practicaly the same engine but the Aviator gots more HP then the Explorer...But if you pay for the lincoln might as well get more horsepower...LOL...My mom is a speed demon and thanks she is in an airplane...she CRAZY...LOL....she scares everybody that rides with her cause she likes to see how fast it will go from 0-70 everytime she drives it, especially down our rock roads it is freaky....but if yall have the money i would run the medium most of the time and then once a month run premium in that bad boy...LOL....but shouldnt have to all the time...

The explorer is SOHC 3 valves per cylender, and the aviator is DOHC and 4 valves per cylender. The aviator has a mach 1 mustang motor in it.

If you have an aviator that cost that much why skimp the last 15-20cents
per gallon on super? with gas over 3$ here thats only.. 1/15 the cost..
so if you get an additional mpg with super it pays for itself and it will run better.

so.. just run super. If you cant afford it go buy a civic :) (ok I know you can afford it lol)

Since this is an old post, and I am not going to work this morning, I thought i Would chime in.

All of my cars except my Ranger and Explorer take premium. I can usually find it for .10 cents more than regular. the worst case scenario, is filling my cadillac from E. That is 30 Gallons, No matter what the price of gas is that is only an extra 3 bucks per fill. Not really enough to worry about. Most of the time it is less than 2 bucks becasue I rarely fill it up from E. So moral of the story in reality it is small change to add premium to your cars tank.

Right i was think about that, the last time I filled the cobra up. It was about a $0.20 difference from 87 to 93 I forget how many gallons I had to get but i figured it was only about $2 difference.
