390 Build Ups

Anyone ever built a 390? Ive heard that you can put 427/428 cranks in them to make it a stroker they are the same block styles. just kind of wondering.
Any help is appreciated.

I'm a bit of an FE guy, hell I have a 428cj Mach 1. The 427 is the same stroke as a 390 so swapping in one of their cranks will gain you nothing except a forged crank. You can swap in a 428 crank which will give you a 410. Ford actually had a 410 that was just that. FE's can usually take a lot of bore so if you had a 428 crank I'd just take it up to a 428. The only thing is a 428 is externally balanced and all other FE's are internally balanced. I have 2 428 blocks and 1 390 block in the garage and a few 428 cranks. If I ever run out of 428 blocks, I plan to make that 390 a 428. :) The FE's are awesome motors as almost anything interchanges, and they were a pretty strong performer back in the day. What are you planning to put it in? Check out 332-428 Ford FE Engine Forum its a great forum.

its going in our mud truck so if i get a 428 crank i will make it a 410? what else would i have to do to do that swap? we are going for around 450 horse we have a 750 cfm demon 4 barrel double pumper that is going on it so we are kind of building it up to that we got the carb for free so why not and yes those fe blocks are good motors this thing has had the **** beat out of it and it still runs and starts every time lol.

Are you sure its a 390 and not a 360? That was just a 390 with a 352 crank. Ford loved doing that odd ball crap. I honestly only paid attention to the hi-po FE stuff so I'm not sure on the 390/360 availability in pickups. I do know that more often than not an FE in a pickup = 360. Either way the block will work. Yes a 428 crank will drop right into a 390 block and give you a 410. Good 428 cranks can be a little pricey though. FE's are simple beasts but make sure you get a decent intake. You can really choke one up with some of the factory intakes. The factory truck 4 barrel intakes suck, if you want you can find a 390 GT intake for $50 at the most. It'll have a big S cast into one of the runners. Its a decent intake for the FE but it weighs about 100+ lbs. Also I'd do something about the exhaust, factory FE exhaust manifolds on trucks and passenger cars were terrible, horrific, vomit inducing, pieces of junk. I guess its like anything it all depends on how much you want to spend. 1+ hp per cubic inch is not a big deal out of a mild FE build.
