4.6L swap questions.
I have a couple questions and I'm hoping the experienced members chime in.
I recieved this response when I asked wirediet.com about a wiring harness.
The 4V last year was 2004. 3V started in 2005 thru 2009. In 2010 the Coyote 5.0 was introduced.
The 08 SportTrac is a 3V 4.6 version. The Main Body harness which contains the wires for the fuel tank including emissions, the 'fly by wire' gas pedal and a couple of other things including correct connectors between harnesses is a major undertaking to 'diet' down (I'm currently working on 2).
The easiest wiring to deal with is the 4V's. It would be in your best interests to confirm if the same year or newer rule applies to your project. Find that out so we can narrow down a few things and get back to me.
Couple of questions:
1. Which trans are you planning for?
2. Are you thinking you'll keep the Ranger body wiring (lights, dash, switches ect.)?
I responded with this that was taken from the MTO website
Original Car, 2000 model year or newer
Motor replaced anytime
Vehicle cannot legally operate if there are visible emissions for more than 15 seconds in any five-minute period (s. 3(1) and s.6)
For Drive Clean testing, the vehicle model year is the model year as designated by the manufacturer (s. 1(2))
Vehicle must meet or exceed what were the emissions standards for the original motor when all original emission control equipment was functioning (s. 4(2))
All emissions control equipment must be attached and functioning. Equipment refers to what came with the replacement motor or be equivalent to what would have come with that motor. (s. 4(2))
Looks like I don't need a motor of the same year or newer, I just need to make it cleaner then my stock motor. It would change me to "hot rod/modified" status and might affect my insurance.
I also forgot to mention that I have what are referred to as SJB or smart junction boxes. They are a bunch of wires that would normally be separated by individual fuses but are grouped together into two or three larger switches.
He just replied with this and I dunno the answers to his questions.
The SportTrac 4.6 3V will have a SJB as well but are they the same one? Also the BEC junction box in the engine compartment? The SJB might be the same (mostly body feature's) but it's hard to believe the BEC for a 4.0 would be the same as a 4.6 3V.
Also the Ranger's Fuel Pump Driver Module (FPDM) and Fuel Pump I would think would have to match to meet the 4.6 fuel requirements.
And last but not least - the PCM/computer connections (3) with the 4.6 3V - body harness, trans harness and engine harness - does the Ranger use the same PCM box and connectors as the 4.6 so the 4.6 PCM can be used instead?
In my opinion if the Ranger's Main Body harness can be used and the 4.6 PCM, engine harness, trans harness along with correct FPDM and Fuel Pump then things would be considerably more do able than if you have to rewire the whole Ranger because your current wiring is not compatible with the 4.6 3V.
I've been able to make the early 5.0's, all the 4.6's up to 2004 'stand alone' so crossing them over to whatever the rest of the wiring is not such a big problem but the 3V's don't lend themselves to that nearly as well - but I'm working on it....
Your situation is new and unique - most transplants aren't having to comply with full emissions and though you might think crossing over a 07 Ranger 4.0 to a 07 SportTrac 4.6 would be relatively easy but the devil is in the details (the main ones mentioned above).
