5.8 swap.... Have I got in over my head?
I've got a 93 ext. cab with a 3.0 and 35s... As anyone with a3.0 knows.. Not a good combo 5th is useless.. Well my boss totaled one of our duallys. It's a97 f350 with a 5.8 and auto. He give me the truck so I got to thinking everyone puts 5.0s in rangers can't be that different or can it? My problem so far is trans issues.. I hate automatics and want it to stay 5 spd. Will I have to change computers with the donor being auto? And what is a good 5 spd for this project?

your truck is on 35's so i'm assuming it's a 4x4... you can use a tranny from a 4x4 f150, 302 or 351 i think they are the same bell housings... you could need to tune the auto functions out of the computer though because the vehicle will idle and drive weird without removing the computer related auto functions out of it.

find a small block zf5 if you want a 5 speed. But good luck making that pig fit under a ranger. Its tight in an F series truck. You can run a 5 speed on an auto computer all day long so long as you keep the shifter range switch plugged in and set in neutral. It works perfectly with those year trucks. As for making it fit there is no difference between a truck 5.0 and truck 5.8. But they use a rather tall intake plenum that will cause issues. If you are serious about this I actually have a set of motor mounts for this swap. 93-97 ranger 351w motor from james duff id sell ya

if you have a body you should be fine, Although a 2 wheel zf5 may be a tough one to come by as they were mostly 4x4. a 5 speed out of an f150 will work as they are small blocks. M5OD iirc.
If you are pertaining to me about the motor mounts, I will shoot you a PM
EDIT: scratch that, mine are for a 4x4 truck, they will not work on a 2 wheel drive

Do you have the ability to get the engine out of the truck? Being a rather old used work engine it will need freshened up im sure. So are these things in your range of ability?
If these sounds like hurtles than fabbing your own steering and source exhuast headers/manifolds my just kill you for a while as those are the biggest issues.

It will be a tight fit, the 351 is a inch taller and a couple inches wider, but with a body lift it might free up enough space. Another note, I know the 351 is free but, a stroked out 8.2 deck motor will out perform a stock stroke 351 any day. If you can, find out the difference in lengths between the manual trannys. If it were me, I would just find a T-5, they are a dime a dozen and would easily handle the power of a stock 351.

it is different....especially with the g 1-3 as the airbox for the hvac is a bit more crowded, but pretty easy to do all in all. the trans is an e4 and a monster. i would suggest a mild aod with a lentech vb.
the m50d from the 97 up v6 150 would be ideal with a manual 4406.

with a big tire lifted truck....starting with a good running roller efi 351....which may be already maf equipped and is obd2 tunable.....
how the hell would one justify a stroker 302 for a driver.
no way. big tires/lift demand a 351.....stroke it for near the same costs. invest in a moates 1/4 horse type setup and have fun.
302 for low 2wd track/street machines.
