Almost might be better to find a whole wrecked Explorer. That way you can get all the little things you need. Radiator, power steering hose, A/C line, throttle cable. etc... Then you can also get the 31 spline rear axle with disk brakes.

That's what I did for my swap. Bought it for $1500. Ended up selling everything and it only cost me about $500 out of pocket.

I like that idea, i just gotta find a spot i can put a wrecked explore. i was planning on having the engine and just working on that for a while, getting in tip top shape ya know.

I got another question. Not that I'm complaining about the gas but does it suck down gas like a champ or is it a little bit better considering it isn't a full size truck?

need rwezning? to chime in. but i think having an 04 makes it infinitely more difficult to swap in proper as far as wiring goes. something like 02 and below the swap is pretty compatible

99~01 5.0 Explorer engine:
  • Easiest swap is into a 99~00 V6 Ranger. These Rangers have the same PATS and speedometer arrangement as the 99~01 Explorer. Probably about 95% plug and play.
  • 98 V6 and 98~00 4-cylinder are also good but need a Type B PATS transplant or PATS delete in PCM software.
  • 2001~2003 add a few electrical issues. The speedometer in particular needs a new way to access and condition the VSS signal. These need a Type B PATS transplant or PATS delete in PCM software.
  • 2004~2006 harnesses were rerouted and many color codes changed. That would make things a bit harder than 2001~2003. These may also need a Type B PATS transplant or PATS delete in PCM software. Not sure if the PATS transplant is practical or not.
  • 2007~2011 have a completely different 170 pin PowerPC PCM and most color codes are revised compared to previous Rangers. The PATS for these years is incompatible with the Ex PCM. May need a Type B PATS transplant or PATS delete in PCM software or possibly something else. Electrically, this is a different animal compared to earlier years.

2004~2011 also have an instrument cluster with digital ODO and its own microprocessor - not sure what grief that would cause.

Compared to the Explorer 5.0, the Mustang 5.0 would be less compatible with a 98+ Ranger.
