I'd try to find out if the frame can handle all that power, it won't hurt to beef it up a little anyway. Do you have a 7.5 or 8.8 in the rear?

so are you gona be going offroad with this truck or are you gona make it a fast stock looking truck? there is gona be alot more added things to do to keep the truck 4x4 too

A guy by the name of "my984.6" has a '98 4x4 Ranger with a 4.6 sohc in it. He talks a little bit about what he had to do to make it happen (he comes in on page two).

The frame and suspension will be fine. You won't have problems with them because of the power. Now, as for the tires. That's a different story!

it will be a fast road truck that will occasionally light 4wheelin like in bad weather conditions but thats it

sounds good. ive always thought about going that route but ive got myself into more of the offroad. most of the new gen swap guys actually are running 4x4 or awd. which is perty cool. if you can beef it up enough to do some awd pulls thats where its at

well i want it just like it is now but with the 5.4 in it so i got that more power when i need it

i think if i do the 5.4 engine swap i would use the 5.4 out of a 2000 mustang cobra R

Actually, once both engines are dressed, the difference doesn't look as big. Fully dressed the dohc 4.6 doesn't get much bigger than the stripped long block shown in the picture. The intake is low, the oil pan is shallow, and the exhaust doesn't extend past the valve cover tips. The 5.0 on the other hand gets bigger with every thing you add to it.

^ yeah true.. those 4.6 heads are just huge

They are huge! But they blow a 5.0 away! Especially with a little work. Cost a bit more though!
