5.0 Swap

5.0 Swap
Hi, I have a 1999 Mazda B3000 Troy Lee Edition. 2wd. 5-speed manual. Torsion Bar. 3.0L
I want to do the 5.0 swap on it but I want to keep it 5-speed. Everywhere I have read in forums and online say to just find an 5.0 Explorer but they are AWD and Automatic. It is completely stock except for the 99 GT 3.73 posi rear about to go in. Swapping the rear is just for the rear disc and posi.
Any advice on this swap or anyone that has done the same thing?

You have an M5OD-R1 trans in your Ranger, you need an M5OD-R2 from a '97-'02 F-150 2wd with 4.2l V6 engine.
4.2l V6 has same trans bolt pattern as 5.0l
And the M5OD-R2 from those years has the shifter in the same spot as Ranger trans, earlier M5OD-R2's shifters were to far forward.
R2's were also used on the modular V8s so they can take the 5.0l power

Yes..............and no, lol.
Back in the late '80's Ford(and the others) started using electronically controlled Automatics, since they already had an on-board fuel injection computer(PCM) they added the trans control software/firmware to that.
So..............the Explorer PCM will "look for" the automatic trans connections, which, of course, won't be there so it will turn on the CEL, PCM will still run the engine OK, may get some high idles now and then, not sure on that.
If you can find someone with a programmer for Ford PCMs they can change the software to manual trans, guessing it would be $200-$250, they could also delete the PATS check if so desired.
I think 1996 was the last year F-150 came with 5.0l and first year of new PCM(EEC-V), if you could find the PCM from a '96 F-150 2WD 5.0l manual it should works as well, and no PATS that year.
