Explorer/Ranger Fuel Pressure Regulator
Well I attempted to change out the fuel pressure regulator from the 5.0 explorer into my Ranger. Well it didnt go so well.... I removed the bed, did all that jazz and went to work... When i removed the pump from the ranger, in no way did it look anything alike... I was just curious as to how the explorer regulator was supposed to hook up to the ranger pump.
the regulator on the explorer has three nipples and connects directly to the fuel pump where as the ranger regulator only has 2 nipples and connects to a hard line running out and to the fuel filter.. and the ranger pump connects directly to a hardline to the fuel filter... Is there a way to use the explorer regulator on the ranger regulator?
on the ranger on the top of the fuel tank the fuel pump assembly has 3 nipples coming off to it: 2 going to the fuel filter and another going to the evap canister...
the Explorer only has one nipple coming off the fuel pump assembly and im guessing thats goin to the fuel filter...
please fill me in on how I could make the explorer regulator work in my ranger fuel pump assembly, Thanks!

This the Explorer Fuel Pump Assembly: Notice the fuel pump at the bottom... In this pic i have the regulator removed but you can see where the regulator mounts at the 2 fuel lines with the clamps on them...
This is the Ranger Fuel Pump Assembly: Notice the orange thing on the side of the assembly. That is the mounting location of the ranger regulator(removed in this pic) And notice i have the Explorer regulator connected like how it was on the explorer assembly. Before i installed it like that, the ranger assembly just had a fuel hose with 2 clamps on them running from the pump to the hardline.
When i put everything back together with the explorer regulator installed just like in the 2nd picture, my truck didnt like it that way and spit and sputtered until it died. So for now i just put the ranger regulator back in and installed it just how it used to be and now it runs like a champ.
Installing the explorer regulator in my ranger assembly was a failure. :(

I believe that the earlier Ranger returnless pumps, possibly 98~2000, were set up like the Explorer.
Maybe you need the non-FFV regulator from the same year 4.0L Ranger as yours. Its spec is 65 PSI nominal just like the Explorer but might fit your plumbing assembly. No guarantees though. A complete non-FFV pump assembly should fit your tank but your 3.0 FFV has some unique connectors, fuel lines and other parts. You'd have to check it out.
For reference, here are pictures of the pump units from a 1999 Ranger, 2002 Ranger and a 2004 Ranger. Maybe these will help.
99 (first) has the regulator positioned like your Ex pump
02 (second) 4.0 non-FFV being converted to a hi volume pump, similar appearance to 2004
04 (third) has the regulator in the filter return but not quite the same as yours.
