I found a guy who made a 302 pass smog in CA, he is going to do it for me if i go with a 302. anyone with a V8 know the kinda mileage you get out of them? im trying to decide if its worth it to do right now with the gas prices and all, or if i should just hold off and turn it into a race truck that wouldnt be street legal.

 

Whats your engine now? A 4 liter will get better mileage than it.

A lot of people say that the ranger will get about 20 mpg, im not sure highway or city. But then, thats without too much skinny pedal. A lot of it is in your driving style. So yes, if you swap a good well running explorer engine in then you should have gains over the 3.0/4.0(kinda depending on the 3.0 though, since some of them get great gas mileage((for a truck))).

I have a 3.0 right now, and its slower than any other truck ive ever had. I can drive with a heavy foot when I NEED to but for the most part, i accelerate like a grandma to keep the gas down. im getting about 16 or 17 miles to the gallon right now. as long as it stays in that general range or goes down to the max 13-14 itll be worth it to me.

 

In my fiance's Bronco her 302 is getting around 15mpg. Drop it in a Ranger and I think you could probably see somewhere around 18-20mpg.

 

It SHOULD get the same or better than the 3.0 you have now. The power/weight ratio is going to come into play here.
