302

The Explorer 302 is especially tailored for the tight engine compartment in 98+ Rangers. Physically, the Ex 302 engine and 4R70 transmission will fit into your 2003 engine compartment without much work. There WILL be wiring issues and may be fuel delivery issues to work out. No 302 except the Explorer is easy in a 98+ Ranger. Use the search function for a bunch of threads on the 5.0L swap into a late model Ranger.
Any small block Ford will go into the BII without too much trouble if you have the right peripheral pieces. More info and the changes that may need to be made are here.

The 95~2001 Explorer engine bay is almost identical to the 98+ 4x4 Ranger so the 302 Ex engine/transmission/t-case assembly bolts in and the engine harness plugs in. The 5.0 Ex PCM would need to be used as well.
Depending on the year of the Ex and the Ranger, there can be complications with PATS, fuel pump type, VSS, etc. but nothing that can't be worked out. Also, the AWD 5.0L has no low range in the t-case but an F-series 2-speed case can be adapted.

Basically just need a complete engine w/trans and accessories, engine harness and PCM?
are the mounts the same?

You also need the radiator, y-pipe, intake tube and some other peripherals. It would definitely be best to work from a complete donor Explorer or all the detail parts would cost a fortune to track down.
You would want to use an Explorer 4R70W automatic from the same year as the engine and PCM. It is electronically controlled and the Ex PCM is calibrated for it. You would probably need a custom driveshaft but I don't know that for sure. Your Edge should have an 8.8 axle which is fine for the torque of the 5.0L.
The Y-pipe will not bolt up directly to the stock Ranger cats and muffler. That would be a simple job for a muffler shop to correct.
The latest Ex 5.0L engines go into 98~2000 Rangers very well. If your Ranger is 2001+, the speed sensor will be a bit of a headache. The signal on the Ex comes from the ABS senor on the rear axle. Your Ranger has that sensor but you would need the Explorer ABS module to condition and correct the speed sensor signal before it goes to the PCM.
Depending on which Ranger engine you have, you might also need to change the fuel pump.
PATS would need to be set up by a dealer.

damn, good info. I would probably look for donor explorer. Would love to have the console and maybe seats out of one anyways :D So is the explorer ABS module plug and play?
engine is a 3.0 Flex fuel.
probably right about the driveshaft, I dont know the wheel base of the explorer but its probably the same as the reg cab ranger so the ext cab would be longer. Just depends if my stock driveshaft would fit the tranny. Or maybe I could just swap the tranny yoke.

Anyone who is thinking about an Explorer swap into a 98+ Ranger should read this thread from start to finish:
