Just burned up 2 ECUs on the ranger. Not sure what's going on but hope you can shine some light. It's been at the tune shop getting dyno'd and today it just died. Cranks but won't start. No blown fuses. TPS has voltage. Has spark while cranking. No injector pulse and no communication at ODBII port. Went to junkyard bought a new ECU put it in and it fired up. Drove it aorund the block parked it, now it won't start again just cranks. This is the 2nd ECU it has blown. Help? :(

Time to take that connector apart and start checking pins. Could have one or two that aren't seated well. Also look for any damaged/exposed wires at the connector itself.

Thanks Justin!
I shook the wire harness around a few times and truck started up again. Really weird...

How is your 347 doing?

Definitely sounds like you have a loose pin or two in there.

Mine was running pretty well until about 2 weeks ago. I was throwing lean codes and it was having trouble running sometimes at lower RPM. It would choke itself to the point of shutting off on occasion. I finally had some time to check it out last week, and found that the header/exhaust pipe flange bolts had completely backed out on the driver's side, which left about a 1.5" gap between them. I could see the exhaust gas literally igniting as it came through the gap. I'm going to take it to the shop that did the exhaust this weekend and have them fix it.

Thanks. They should've installed them with the heads facing up, so that even if they got loose the bolts wouldn't fall out. Oh well, everything else is good besides that.

I got a couple exhaust leaks coming out of my new headers after modifying them to fit. Need to take them back off and do some welding.

Exhaust leak fixed. Now to fix my oil leak from valve covers and I think I'll be good after that.

Ranger just stopped running for no reason. Won't start. It cranks but doesn't fire. Checked fuel battery and changed coil pack still nothing. Any ideas?

Ask RonD. He'll give you a list of everything possible you can try and then some.

I'll have to hit up RonD or Bob.
I can't for the life of me figure out why my **** won't start anymore. It cranks, I have fuel, I have spark, so lost right now and frustrated.

302 vs 3.0 fuel press issue

hi, I'm reading some of these posts and you said if you put a 97 5.0 in a ranger with a 3.0 you will have fuel pressure issues being the 3.0 has higher pressure and no fuel return, the 5.0 uses less pressure and has return line, when I did my swap I took the return line from donor and hooked it to an adaptor at fuel filler pipe. according to the reg at intake my pressure is good but I do have a trouble code for running lean? any ideas on this would be welcome..

how is your timing? really if you have spark, fuel and still nothing then its probably just sparking at the wrong time, or flooded to hell, but usually that's just on carbed motors. where you would then check your oil for gas etc. Maybe the timing chain slipped a couple teeth? you said you changed coil etc. plugs on right? does it have not even a sign of starting, or does it sound like its trying to. like little pops or misses.

Finally got it to start and the harmonic damper was wobbling all over the place. I guess I overlooked re-balancing a balanced kit. Looks like the crank was vibrating and snapped. Ugh.

Operation engine removal begins again...

I know your thread is 2 years ago but I'm curious how it went since you took a 3.0 out like I did and you said you would need a new fuel pump regulator? not sure why, the 3.0 in my 98 was at about 60 psi and the 5.0 is at 35-44 or so, the ranger fpr is in tank the 5.0 is on rail on intake. the issue ive had for awhile is running lean and a mechanics laptop showed the maf sensor giving an incorrect barometric press..like I was in Denver, not Pittsburgh. which is why it ran lean...I drove it home today..17 miles, no t/c light and she seemed fine

I put a high performance walboro? fuel pump in the tank and an adjustable fpr on the rail. 3.0 had no return, this 5.0 does.

Still waiting on replacement crank now. This time I went with a 28oz external balance forged scat crank. Hopefully this is much stronger, going to get it all balanced this time and reinstall.

Still on back order for 2 more weeks :(
