LS1 powered Ranger?

well one of my friends has a '94 Ranger 4x2 that he and his dad have totally upgraded. its pretty freakin sweet. prerunner fenders and all that good stuff specifically designed for jumping. in it right now he has a 4.0 OHV with some mild mods like intake and exhaust. but his dad is workin a deal with one of his customers (he does performance work on cars/trucks for a living) to get a hold of an LS1 to put in the Ranger. for those of u who dont kno wut an LS1 is, its a GM motor, 5.7L pushrod V8 with about 350hp and a little more than that in torque. awesome! i hope it all works out cuz that will be a freakin SICK truck wen they're done...

A guy takes his blue dakota to Bloom every year with a 5.9 cumcum in it. I gota say he freaking stuffed that thing in there. A little triming on the firewall and some custom fabing. She's sick. A 7.3 in a ranger with dual 6" stacks would be freakin nuts!

Personally, I'd do an LS2. Best of all, my MPG would probably improve and the truck would weigh about the same. The torque curve would be better than the 5.0 as well.

400hp in a 3400lb truck.

diesel motors = HEAVY sob... surprised out frames can take it honestly. Yeah LS1 ranger wont smoke some of the rangers out there really.. i would like to see a 5.4 out of a shelby gt500 thrown in a ranger with the s/c. that would be fun.

Oh and is the 3400 a 2wd?? cause mine is 4wd and its 4060lb

3.0 2wd ranger is like 3400 curb weight IIRC.

Why? Unless you are going to do an aluminum modular v8, the R&D put into the LS series far surpasses that of ford's engines. Still, the LS series are more efficient.

I don't give a crap about that. You do not mix things like that. Just leave the GM stuff where it is at.

Any of the LSX engines are far superior to the 302 in pretty much every way. Sure the 302 bolts right in with Explorer mounts, but that doesn't mean it's better than an LS1. It's a great engine, with great power and great fuel efficiency for what it is. If you think a 302 is better you are just lying to yourself. I hate GM but I have been looking into GTO's and C5 corvettes lately because of how much I like the engine. Throw some nice heads and a nice cam on an LS1/2 and you've got some serious numbers. LSX series engines have been shoehorned into like every car, and there is a reason for that. Wait until Hazzardjohn posts, I believe he also knows a thing or two about the LSX series.

haha i think its funny that stuff like this always turns into an argument. lol... LS1 beats 4.0. thats the bottom line. =)
of course there are better alternatives. an example is a LS9 powered Ranger. 620 hp 595 lb/ft 6.2L supercharged V8? yes please. there is no factory Ford engine with that kinda output.

Im sorry if I'm throwing a 302 into a ranger im not going for MPG. Sure the LS series are great, so is the OLD 5.0. 60's technology vs. late 90's technology. I got some apples and oranges to compare if you want.

I'm no GM guy, but an LS motor is FAR more efficient (power wise) compared to a 5.0.

There's a funny motivational poster out there...

"LS1's... They'll stick it in anything"
