Explorer 5.0 2wd in a Ranger 4wd?

Found a awesome deal on a 5.0l out of a 2wd explorer. I can get the whole explorer for $400. I have a 4wd ranger. Is it possible to do the swap, if I get a manual t-case?

you will need to get a 5.0 4wd transmission......that shouldn't be had to find since the 5.0/302 was offered in F-150's and other Explorers that were 4wd...

130k. My 3.0 has 160k on it. If I do go through with the 5.0, which is a very good possibility, just waiting on the bank, the motor is completely getting torn down, rebuilt, and im adding some toys to it, nothing TOO major though.

you should be able to find a truck 302/5.0 that is 4wd.......the 302/5.0 was a fairly common engine in the late 80's up to the new body style came out in '97.....

I think I may be able to score a tranny. my friends swapping out his 351 in his f-150 for a 460, and selling the 351 to another friend to swap out his 302, and since im doing a 302 swap, he may have it still, I'll check. Right now im just trying to figure out a rough estimate of how much the rebuild and install is going to cost, so I know how much of a loan to pull out. Hopefully, ya'll can help, because I have no idea where to start.

so far Ive got the following

totaled 98 explorer, everything under the hood(engine, tranny, ecu, harness, etc), and inside good, just has body damage to passenger front, and no air bags. Price $400

ford racing gasket set. (Gasket set ) Price:$90

thats what I have so far...what else am I going to need or point me in the direction, Ive tried to read some other threads, but I get discouraged in going through the whole 18 pages. lol. I guess you can call me lazy.

Im looking to do a mild build to the motor, basically just to rebuild it back to "new". Depending on the cost of everything, I may add some little toys like a cam, new lifters, and a few additions.

Ive got a 98 Ranger 4wd manual tranny, the Donor is a 98 Explorer 2wd auto tranny.

Engine:Out of the donor
Tranny: 4R70W out of a 4wd. Think it will work.
ECU: Out of the donor
Transfercase: ? I think manual would simplify things. but have no model #.

I may just keep with the 2wd tranny for now, until I can save for the 4wd tranny and t-case, depending on the availibility and price of the 2.

As far as suspension, am I going to have to strengthen the front suspension any? and if so whats the most cost effective way.

I just went in the bank, asked to speak to someone about a personal loan. Told them that I needed about 2k to do some work to my vehicle. They told me that the minimum I could take out was 5k, and recommended a Credit card instead, so he applied me for one, and now im just waiting for it to come in the mail. He put the limit at $2500, which will be better for me, because if I had 5k, ya, I may do some extra things to the ranger, which would be nice, but have other payments that have a higher priority than a SAS or supercharger.

Read the list in this thread - very helpful for 98+ 5.0L Ranger swaps.
http://www.rangerpowersports.com/for...d.php?t=170886

For a manual transfer case, you can use a BW4406 or probably a BW1356 from a fullsize but it will be very close to the DS frame rail. The bolt pattern is compatible with just about any Ford 4x4 5.0 transmission.

If you do do it yourself make it detailed . some people dont know that theres more to it than unbolt and replace.

ok, got an update on the explorer. I asked my friend that found me the 'ploder, since he was that way(it's his uncles shop, 6hrs from here, he went up there for the weekend), to check for half-shalfs to double check that it was 2wd or 4wd, he said there were no half shafts but it is a torsion bar setup, and no coil sprung. Are explorers not the same as rangers?as far as 2wd coil front, 4wd t-bar?

Thats what I figured, just checking. and the Explorers have the heavier duty t-bars right?

will do man, the motor will be out of the truck and on a engine stand for probly 6months, if not longer, while I re-build it, and add my toys to it. In the mean time I'll still be driving my truck around. I've alotted 2weeks for the actual swap. All the work is being done at my roommates parents house in Garner, he's got a garage. I'll defintely let you know though, I may need some extra hands.

Im buying the whole explorer...lol, anything I need off the explorer will be no more than 20 feet from where im doing the swap at, then when I get done with the explorer, its getting hauled to the scrap yard, along with my 3.0, after it is completly torn down. Unless that is, anyone on here wants anything off of it. no fear my friend, this isnt the first swap I've done, its my first swap dealing with a V8 in a little truck however.

you will hafta check the spring codes on the door tag. my mounty had lighter bars than my ranger.

all 95-01 explorers had torsion bars regardless of 2wd, 4wd, or AWD.

well, turns out, I wont be doing the swap, which sucks, but at the same time, I just gonna save up the money I would do for the swap and buy me a bigger, and newer truck, one with a V8 already in it, maybe even a diesel.
