The 98~00 Ranger speed sensor is on the rear axle like the 98~01 Explorer. For these years, you don't have to change anything for the speedometer.

95~97 Ranger/Explorer used a signal generator on the side of the trans or in the t-case for VSS but that does not apply to 98 and later.

The 98~2001 4R70W has sensors that are used by the transmission but not the speedometer.

Be aware what kind of ABS braking system you have when addressing this issue. If your Ranger is currently RWABS, and the Explorer is 4WABS, you will have to swap the 4WABS module over to maintain the signal from the VSS so it will operate the speedometer.

I changed my ECU, gauge cluster, and entire drivetrain (motor, trans, rear) from Ranger to Explorer. In the process I failed to swap the 4WABS module. It was only until later I discovered (with rwenzing's help) that the VSS signal is condition in the 4WABS module before being transmitted to the ECU and gauge. If you try to maintain RWABS, the signal from the VSS gets lost at the In-Line Connector by the brake booster. This will kill your Speedometer AND ODOMETER/TRIP METER. It will also effect the ABS system's functionality.

I have NOT looked into a RWABS to 4WABS swap. I'm almost certain the front brake lines and spindles would have to be swapped since they will be plumbed to the 4WABS module and must receive a signal from each front wheel as well. (spindles)

The good news is if your truck has 4WABS already, you can disregard everything I just said, quit worrying about that little sensor on the tail of the transmission, and Plug N Play!

I haven't done the conversion myself but I don't see why the existing speedometer setup in the 98~2000 RABS trucks would.not also continue to work after an Explorer 5.0 swap. The VSS signal in the 99~00 RABS trucks is conditioned in the GEM and should be independent of which PCM is being used. This is assuming that no harness or electrical parts in the Ranger have been changed except those that relate directly to the engine/transmission.

Mine on 33's was a solid 15.5 second truck.

Haven't run it on the 30's yet. But for a lifted truck ill take 15's all day.

Yours is stock?
