possibility of a 4.6

My 01 is a 3.0 aka Bill SLowsky
i came across an opportunity of getting a 4.6 outta a 94 Grand Marquis. Car was in a reck, kid wants $500 for whole car. So i figure i can part it out bla bla bla.
Now my question is.. how difficult/costly will this be.
and is that 4.6 tunned down from a mustang or explorer?
Thanks

Its very much castrated from the Mustang and Explorer 4.6s. IIRC it only makes around 200 hp. It wont be making much more power than a 4.0L to be honest, but if you plan to change some things before you toss it in there you should be able to help it out a ton. To swap in as is though? Id find another engine if that were the case. All id use of that one would be the shortblock and the accessories. The heads, intake and cams are worthless.

EDIT- all i could find is that the dual exhaust models made 210hp and 270 lbs of torque. So its like swapping for a 4.0L with a little more torque. If you are gonna do it, do it right and get a better one.

Something to remember...4.6 mod motors are SUPER wide.

Marquis/Town Car engines are NPI and have a few different parts but are essentially the same as 96-98 Mustang NPI motors. The engine management detunes the car a bit, I am pretty sure the cams are different.

A bit late to comment but...

IMO if a guy ever does a mod motor in a ranger. Most definately use a set of "PI" heads. (99+ years) It's a waste to use the 98 and older ones.

As best I can tell based on looking at my ranger you'd have a problem with the HVAC. And you'd have to have the motor quite high in the engine bay to make the heads/headers clear. That's ok for dragracing.. but not for other types of driving.

IMO a 5.0L is a much easier way to go. Plus you won't make the same low end TQ.. which will help with street traction.

4.6's are a dime a dozen and not real expensive.

The 5.4L is a long stroke motor. So if your into off roading (keeping the rpms down) then it's a good way to go. Thier intakes tend to be a bit tall though.
