Ford Premium radio buttons

I been searching for an answer, but haven't found one yet, or possibly accidentally overlooked it. I have an 01 Sport with the Premium dual media radio, and have a problem. Some of the radio button lights will not light up, everything else works perfect, display everything. I did a lot of reading, this is not the Mach model with the RDS button, with the light issues.

It's just the regular Premium dual media unit shown below, but the AM/FM, Seek, Tune, and Rew buttons do not light as the rest of the radio does. I know from searching though the Premium, and Mach unit look similar they are different internally. Has anyone took 1 of these apart is there bulbs behind the faceplate, or leds? I can't afford a new radio right now, so only option is repair it if I can, thanks.

led's

It's not very difficult if you have the right tools and can solder small surface mount devices. Here is a pic of the board inside the faceplate from the stock stereo on my '01

I recently got a stereo out of an '09 (has the AUX input) and replaced the led's on that one w/ blue ones. They were a different size and considerably smaller... Here's what the '09 looked like

That looks nice, but yeah I know how to solder, I have some experience with electronics. I will probably get around to it sooner or later when I can motivate myself to do it lol.

Sorry this isn’t the same radio but I believe Ford would use the same parts on radio models, maybe not.
The ‘03s CD6 look like this:

The Surface Mounted LEDs are small but workable:

Here is what was in there and what went in, again workable.

These are RED but you can get a kit from the Web with everything you need.
Not a good pic but all I have.

and now one more question…

Why not consider a replacement, aft mkt or JY.
There are a lot of Rangers in the JY and easy take out on the Radio.
If you don’t have the Push in Tools, just remove the Radio Bezel and undo the clips.

Thanks, I have thought about that, there are a few JY's nearby with explorers, and rangers, so that is definitely an option.

If you do go to the JY, look for an Expo Sport; with the PIoneer System but it may be an option.
I found a Silver FAced System in the last one I saw, CD6 Head Unit, Component frt speakers (separate tweeters), and 6x8 Rear Speakers.
I put the Component Speakers in the front of my truck and they sound great with the iPod Adapter from US Spec.

I am doing graduation in electronics. And also I have some experience with electronics. So I will definitely try to this. But, as per the whole knowledge of electronics I think, ford would use the same parts on radio models.

onlyme,
How did you do on this ?
New Radio or replace the LEDs ?
I have one of the Silver Faced CD6 Radio out of an 01 Ex Sport, if you are interested, short cash for the radio AND if you want we can do speakers too ?

Let me know.
