Cheap and clean double din installed
I just installed the Panasonic cq-5800u in my ranger this morning. Looks like a OEM unit now that I have it installed ( which is what I wanted), it has a I pod hookup and best of all it was only $114. Its cheep, the sound quality is pretty good, and it has all of the features that I need.
Here are some pics
Old vs. new

A few of it installed

I should mention that this unit was a royal pain to install as the Metra double din kit had to be severely modified to get it to work. All of the modifications to the it were made to the front cover but we are talking about cutting it in half and and dremeling the F out it. I dont know if it is the dimensions of the unit or if the kit from metra was off, but I would suggest getting a different install kit if you are thinking of getting this unit.
Thats about it, just thought I would share in case anyone else was looking for a cheep and good looking upgrade to there head unit.

Not yet, I just put it in today and I am also prepping the parts so I can do the rear brake disk mod this weekend so I have been busy today. Truth be told that is a feature I doubt I will ever use.

That's cool. It would be nice to have a weather band radio for when I go hiking. When I worked for Dr.Pepper the radio that was in the truck had the weather bands but didn't pick them up for crap.

But yea the 3.5 audio jack and the USB port are on the front, but that is where I want them.
Different strokes for different folks.

The radio also has the NOAA Weather Radio built into it.
I installed the deck and got quite a bit of new dremel time in tonight. The install took around 2.5 hours. I had to get everything out, carefully sand down the radio bezel, then widen the cover plate and bracket (because mine is a 4x4 and the switch gets in the way).
I used the Sosche kit and it's junk. In the spring I'm going to redo it and use the Metra kit as it looks a little more sturdy. I don't know of any other brands.
It actually lights up a more yellow green than straight green as in Ford's models. It was a little disappointing because all the pictures online show it a true green.
Sounds a heck of a lot better over stock. I think my factory 01 radio sounded better than my stock MP3/CD/Cassette 04 radio...:(

Ive been looking for a new Panasonic cq-5800u for about three weeks now and finally found a new one for $125.00 shipped. Should be here on Friday. I have a 2004 Ranger 4x4. For those that have done this install how difficult is it with the 4x4? I found a radio shop here in town that will do it for $150.00 but Im wanting to try it myself first.
Does the Panasonic cq-5800u plug directly into the Ford wiring or will I have to cut and splice?
Thanks for the help
