i just put in my system a while ago and i noticed the amp is getting really hot its a 500 rms watt amp hooked up to a 400 rms sub and running 6 ga power wire i have it sitting on the floor right now so it can kinda breath
is there a prob with the way i hooked it up or it just gets hot?

I have a sundown 1200 that I just put in and it doesn't get hot at all. It has vents on the bottom that I had to space it off the back wall. You could be over working the amp, I would run a min of 4ga for the power/ground and make sure all your connections/ground are clean. If your running your amp at low load also it will run hot.
The purpose of the gain is to match the signal volts RMS coming from the source (CD player, etc.) to the input of the amp for correct power matching and to prevent clipping....

Nice idea as long as the fan is not drawing power off of the remote line. If power was just tapped from the positive and negative terminals of the amp and a relay was used to turn the fan on only when powered up, then that would be fine. I doubt it will help much. Pictures of you amp? Might help to take the cover off, unless it acts as a heat sink and pulls heat away, then not a good idea to remove it.

My Kicker ZX300.1 was getting super hot about halfway threw the breakin period, come to find out we had the sub setting on the head unit set to like 8 and the amp would start to smell if i played it very hard for a long period of time. After we turned the head unit down to 6 it stopped getting as hot and stopped smelling. I also have the bass **** on mine and can play it at any level and not have any problems with the amp getting very hot . so You might try turning the head unit down one or two clicks.
