Broke another sub?

Ok, a week ago, I put my lightning audio 12" subs in after one of my Rockford P1's cone seperated. Today, I was going down the road, and all the sudden, one of the subs started making a loud noise when it hit. It sounded about like my P1 did when the cone seperated from the surrounding. THEN, later on, it quits for a couple minutes, then starts back again. I looked them over, and they look fine. Any body know whats going on? Im running out of subs. lol (actually, the lightning audio subs were my last ones). Btw, if you missed my last thread about the broken sub, none of my subs i've had hooked up were over powered at all.

if it burnt up a voice coil youd smell burning trust me and see smoke! ive done it on purpose its usually pretty rank..take the sub out and check the power and ground connections from the hook ups on the sub to the voicecoil...one may be kinda broken or broken and hardly touching...

I dont know what it is, cause it seems to not do it if I turn the bass down, and turn the volume up (makeing the bass amplify by turning the volume up)......although it does it on and off.

push on the sub..a normal sub would move up and down..if it doesnt and seems "frozen" then the coil is fried

Well, took the sub out, and it smelled like someone had been smoking, and I can't stand that. I've found out that it will start acting up pretty quick with a song like "walk it out" (the already messed up sub).

EDIT: here is a video of the sub making the noise.......you'll have to turn the volume up until you can hear it.

I put my good P1 sub in, so now i've got a p1 and lightning audio now. Now, if one of those mess up, well that just sucks! lol

While im on this topic, I thought that subs, when they hit, were suppost to hit outward.......mine look like they do the most action inward (It appears to anyways). I've got the + and - hooked up to each sub right.......I do have bass however, but just by looking at the subs, they look like they're going the wrong way.

Switching the + and - reverses the phase of the sub. So when it would usually outstroke, it will instroke. It wont hurt anything if you keep both subs the same.

Correct, they just wont sound right if out of phase. It sounds to me like you are killing subs with distortion. You should be able to tell by your ears when the amp has reached its max, it wont get much louder when turning it up but the subs will start to sound worse.

Coil getting too hot, usually from distortion or too much power.

Since I have a factory radio, and the amp signal is hooked up through the rear speakers, should I be using the bass control on the radio to adjust the bass for the subs? I have the bass on the radio about half way, and the gain on the amp about half way. In my old truck, I had a aftermarket radio, and had the amp hooked to the preamp outputs, and could turn the gain on the amp almost to its max, and no distortion, but I dont know about this factory radio..........how should I control the bass? turn the bass all the way down on the radio, and control it with the gain on the amp? or what?

WHOA WHOA...NEVER run your GAIN at full power...you wanna destroy stuff thats how you do it! i run my gain maybe MAYBE at 1/4 and let the bass boost **** and the deck control the rest and is defaning! my suggestion would be save up and get an aftermarket HU! would work alot better..

since I put the system in the Ranger, I only have the gain at about 1/2. The subs are rated 150rms, and the amp puts out about 125rms per sub.
