Blowing my friend's doors in.

Kicker comp 10's are crap so you wont have that hard of a time blowing him away, look on craigslist for a quality used sub (hertz, focal, DD, premier champions series...)
as for speakers hertz hsk 6.5's or 5.25's are good for the money, as for head units make sure you find some with at least 4v preouts, the older premier line is a good place to start or the new jvc lineup

Drop fosgate.
MBquart premium woofers (280oz magnets!) one of them ported and tuned will blow his doors in.
Which ever BRAND you go after make sure you don't just "buy the pre made box on the shelf" and get one that's TUNED for that woofer! And have a shop tune your amplifier, his 80watt system probably isn't tuned and is all out of whack.

Well, me and Drew both had the same sub. I know what a JL will do, and I don't think its overpriced at all. I was highly impressed by the clarity of the bass at all sound levels, the amount of bass, etc. I was blowing away several ppl with 2 12s, 15s and all I had was one with a 1600 watt amp.
