Doea anyone care about sound quality anymore?

i fully agree with you man...and i have to say i think alot of people do care. I mean it seems that a majority of the general populus cares more about bassline, but alot of automotive companies are getting into sound quality with their vehicles. For instance, there are about 30 different cars made today that come with dolby surround. Some with 2.1, some with 5.1, and some with 7.1. So not everyone has given up on hearing the music as well as feeling, instead of just feeling it...

It's still there for enthusiasts, but it's not "sexy" -- POWER is the thing that excites people, whether it's useful or not!
I think it's a social disease personally. Our whole culture is infected by it.
Anyway, I hear incredibly powerful systems that don't sound as good as my stock HU, 3 ways and small sub. I see guys take a box design that was NOT designed for a port and port it, and then it resonates at certain frequencies and hits WAY too hard and sounds like crap.
There ARE people who design good, flat boxes and balance their systems. But they are largely ignored because they're not at the "db drags".

SQ is both very expensive, and also hard to qualify (at least when bragging online). One can say it's all about SQ, but how can one tell another how their quality stacks up to any other system? But SPL is measurable.
But that's one reason why I build sealed boxes, because I mostly listen to Rock n Roll and blues, and not much rap and hip hop.

That is so funny that you said that. I was riding around the other day and i pull up to a light. To the left of me sits an 04 tahoe with a very powerful system designed for bass only. It was very aggravating to me, so being the spiteful *** that i can sometimes be, i turn up my stock Mach MP3 system to about 1/2 full volume while playing Mudvayne's Happy. It didn't take long for those guys in the tahoe to turn their stereo down and roll up there windows...it was so funny....i love the clarity of the mach system...Visteon outdid themselves....

everbody says my system sounds good and isnt overpowering. ive got a 12 inch sub in a ported box with 500 watts feeding it. ive got the treble up higher then the bass even though ive got an aftermarket stereo. when i hear these huge basses from other cars i just laugh and ask why you need that much. i see no point to it and i love the clarity that my stock speakers get from my aftermarket head unit and sub.
i do like to play my country loud at times though. well, since its getting hot i have the windows down and you cant hear the music over the exhaust unless its turned up.

staging and imaging are still out there.. you just have to look for the people that are into it. i spent a while getting mine to sound right. and same goes with the clarity of the box.. when i want it to.. i can just about blow my rear window out.. but, for normal listening, i can have the bass way down so the mids and highs aren't over powered.. next thing for my system is a set of dedicated mids that im going ot seal in the door panels.. once they're in there, im going to have to take my 5.25's and build either a kicker for it, or form it into the door pocket.. which ever sits better for my imaging.

lol.. i got pulled over twice for that.. one while i was in a parking lot back in high school after home coming.. a cop pulled out in front of me and told me to turn it down, he couldn't hear his country music.. he was cool about it though and kinda gave me a laugh about it, so i said sorry and obeyed.. then the other time i was at an intersection.. made the turn, and the cop came thru the light and stopped me.. but that time he wanted to see what kind of stuff i had, lol.. it was some younger guy.

I have noticed that for many people bass is all that matters. I know a guy who has the treble all the way down and the bass all the way up in his car and he has said to me that he doesn't care about sound quality, he just wants people to hear it. That doesn't make sense to me, but whatever. I admit that I do like to listen to a hard hitting rap song from time to time with the bass up, but I turn it down at lights.
And I have to agree with Rob, many stock Visteon HUs are nice. I thought about going aftermarket for a while, but went with a Premium AM/FM/CD out of an F-150 and have no complaints so far. It has pretty much everything I want as far as features and the clarity is nice.

i have the mach mp3 system in my danger ranger and i think it sounds good. i work on installing systems for a living so bass gets on my nerves after doing it for three years and going through 4 different systems. my last car i finally went all sq. it's all good. just depends on what you want.

I'm building my system for sound quality... well not like the hardcore people do, but I'm making sure the bass isn't overpowering and that I have good clear sound. I hate it when people play their sh!tty music just to be louder than the next guy. It's like a bad game of ***** envy. I want to enjoy my music the way it was meant to be heard, and I don't want the person next to me at the light to have to listen to my music too.

I do like the Mach system in my truck, it puts out enough bass for anything from blue/classic/southern rock and also dance/house and a little rap/r&b. The acoustic guitar sounds amazing, but not as nice as some cheapo Pioneer speakers I had (paper cone). One day, when the truck is payed off and I have something nicer to drive, I'll put it under the knife with some Scanspeak Revelators or something like that, maybe even a Seas Lotus system!
And with the subject of the thread, Yes, I beleive that almost no one cares about sound quality anymore. Back in the day almost every sound competition was SQ, but since the invention of the solid state amplifier, everyone has been on a "power trip" with their "2000 watt amp" and "15 inch subs" that "hit" "slam" and "bump" really nicely. And half the time, they don't even know what the hell the installer used...
Maybe, just maybe with the revival of rock music and the acoustic sounds of drums, guitars, and other real instruments... there will be sound quality again!
There was a kid that showed up to the car club meeting the other night, and he told me he had 2 15" MTX Punches... what an idiot. He definitely won't be making the cut. I don't let anyone into the club officially unless they know almost as much as I know about their own car.
