XM Satellite Radio

I finally broke down and bought XM. Probably one of the best investments I've made so far :)

I first mounted it to the vent with the included vent adapter and that just looked way ghetto. So, I went out, bought the direct wire fm modulator kit and installed it over where the air bag on off switch is. I'm so impressed with how it turned out, looks professionally installed!!!

All the wires, harnesses and such are behind the radio bezel. The antenna is hidden in the headliner and for now is poking out the window until NJ thaws out and I can do it the right way out of the 3rd brake like.

NJ thaws out?! What's that about?

Very cool install. What sent you in the XM route instead of Sirius?

Not too sure. A few people have it at work and recommended it, so I picked it up :)

We have Sirius radio in our house but not in our cars. Plus my parents got thsi 1500 dollar Bose home system so I can really get it pumpin. Its kinda a downer though cuz people want me to throw parties in my house but I cant because my parents/sister are always home. I plan on getting Sirius radio for my truck when I get some money but I'm sorta always poor so my b-day will probably come first. It looks sweet in your truck, too bad the face of that thing didn't light up like Sirius or probably other XM models do. Very sweet though!

One is a lot?

Sirius has nearly doubled it's subscribers in the past 6 months. I don't know how XM is doing. Last I heard Sirius had 1 million and XM had 3.2 million.

well when you compare 2 against 3, 1 does make a big differecnce but in the satalite world probably not much, However I don't know who has more repeaters though

No, it really doesn't make much difference. Why? Because XM's two satellites are in geosync orbits, which means they are ALWAYS over the continental US. The Sirius satellites are however not! The Sirius satellites are in orbits calculated such that at least two satellites are over the continental US at any given time. I've heard people argue that the Sirius setup promises better reception because the XM satellites are low in the sky, comparitively. I have never used or even seen an operational XM setup, so I can't comment directly on it, but I buy the argument..

I would ignore ground repeaters. They are only in urban areas. I don't think I've ever used a ground repeater, although I could be wrong. My friend who has a handheld XM set tells me XM has some ground repeaters in Boston, but none around here. And Nashua is still a pretty urban area.

My parents connect with a ground repeater with Sirius at their house.

The Sirius satellites are always moving and changing signal strength. If you have a weak connection the signal will come and go at certain times during the day.

the 2 satalites over the US is a huge advantage over xm (not taking repeaters into account).

But they are probably pretty damn close to the quality. The main thing would be the features each offer would be

But again, XM also has two satallites over the US. The difference is that the XM satellites are usually lower in the horizon (because they are in a geosync orbit over the equator).

The unit is on sale for $99.00 from $129.00 at Best Buy. Yes, you need to pay the $9.99 a month for standard subscription but it's worth every penny. I think it's like $2.99 extra for a few premium channels, mostly for Opie & Anthony. I'm not paying for that, I rarely listen to morning talk, just BBC and news really aside from music. Here's the channel line-up for XM. Not really sure about Sirius.

The Sirius listing is here. Sirius will run you a few bux more. It runs $12.95/mo but they've got 'deals' if you sign on for a year or two at a time. 1 year is like $142, or ~11 months regular rate. You get a bigger discount for 2 years. There's also a lifetime subscription for like $500..

I just ordered the XM commander for my truck through my job. Should be installed by this weekend.

It even matches my interior scheme.

Do they have XM or Sirrus in Japan? Nope, but I can pull in 79.1FM! Try to do that on your US based receivers! hah!

Well I use sirius cause we're in alaska..and aren't supposed to be able to get either! Oh yeah, and Bose sucks with their small systems.. But it's a pretty damn nice large system, with woofer and lotsa speakers. But its still too expensive
