There is a removal tool the pushes into those four holes and releases the retainer clips.

You can also remove the 2 bolts above the HVAC controls and pull the entire bezel out. Then just push the retaining clips and the radio will slide right out the front.

You can pull the radio and bezel out as one unit and push the clips on on either side of the radio just behind the bezel to release it.

Or stick some small allan keys into those holes mentioned above. They work too.

Remember to remove the plug going to the back of the radio, the wire ain't that long. The plug has a funky clip holding it in as well.

2 ways of doing it. take 4 long nails and stick them in the holes, it will release the clips and the whole radio will pull out. OR remover the 2 screws out from the radio dezel. Pull out the whole bezel and then use a screw driver to release the clips. I ussually use this method because its easier.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUY ANY TOOL TO DO IT. dont waste your money. but if you want send me $10 and ill send you 2 'U' shapped pieces of wire.

An old metal coat hanger works good to make a ford radio removal tool out of.

I've had to pull mine out a lot to tap wires for different mods and stuff like that.

Thanks gang.

Yes I am putting in a Sony my wife bought for me (xmas) that was intended for my vette, but, that aint happening this year so I'm putting it in the Ranger

assumation correct

I searched the archives for an answer before posting the question, so I know there are mixed opinions about Sony. But it was a gift .. has bluetooth.. and anything has to be better than that vanilla pos radio that came with the truck. (just trying to see the clock on the lcd in the summer sun is impossible)

I got 4 nails and old coat hangers

I would just remove the bezel. I put in a head unit yesterday and had to remove the bezel to get the mounting kit in.

Dont feel bad about the sony, lol. Free gear is free gear. Sony is known for poor sound quality, cheesy looks, and cheesy build quality. It'll still play music and probably outdo the stocker as far as power and distortion at high volumes. If you dont mind the looks or the cheesy feel then who cares? It's an upgrade from stock.

Actually guys- what I want to do is to get to the top of the dash board just above the radio so I can mount a gadget to hold my cell phone. I have not been able to find one of those cell phone grippers that will grab onto the air outlet and stay in place.

I want to mount a small piece of cypress or mahogany to the dash board just above the air outlet. Do I have to remove the radio to do that??
Thanks

Holy-old-thread Batman!

To remove the radio(and bezel), there are two 8mm bolts right above the HVAC controls. Remove these. Now with either your fingers or plastic trim removal tools, pull out on the radio bezel itself. There are four metal clips holding it in. Be firm, but not forceful.

That's it.
