Porting a box

Ive got 1 ten inch sub in the back of my truck in a regular box and i was wonderin what would happen if i ported my box. I hate how i only have REALLY loud bass if i have all my windows open...i dont understand that but i figured maybe porting it would fix that.
Thanks

the speaker needs to move air to make sound with your windows down there is more air to move

i'm not as big on audio as i once was but i liked the sound from a sealed box better with my subs in the past, but i have seen alot of guys with ports i think that it all boils down to if your box is the right size(volume) for your sub the last ones i had work great in a small box i think if you port it you need a bigger box but i don't know what you have so i can't say for sure check alpine's site and see what Cubic feet they say you need then measure and see if you have it and remember you have to take away volume for you speaker sticking in the box as well as any internal structure

I think (not sure) from reading about the type R's that they are portable.

Your sub will probably always be louder with the windows down, no matter what type of box.

A ported box should generate more SPL than a sealed box, but If you add a port to a existing sealed box, you'll probably be way under volume. This may counteract any gains from a ported design. It's also easier to screw up the box if it's a ported design (or convert).

I recommend you search the web for the thiele/small stats of your sub, and build a proper box for it.

Or use this online to determine what kind of box your sub is better off with.

Its not as simple as just cutting a hole out.

Depends on the driver, size of box, how deep you want to go, etc.

Gets very complicated if you do not know a lot of stuff.

People think it is just cutting a hole and putting in a tube. Ever have anyone tell you that "ported subs sound like crap?" Thats why.

Find someone who knows what they are doing to teach/show you how. If not, you wont be happy with results.

the size of the port is related to the volume of the box AND the t/s parameters of the subwoofer... your sealed box probably wouldnt have adequate volume to "turn it into" a ported box. if you look online your sub manufacturer might have exact parameters for a ported box. if you build them right, they generally wont sound like crap, and theyll give a noticable increase in output. the best way i can describe a main difference in the sounds is that ported sounds more "boomy" to me, while sealed sounds tighter. my old system was sealed, and my current one is ported, and i like the current one better :o)
