I'm totally up in the air on what to do with my new (to me) 2004 Ranger Subercab (2D)...

I was at first thinking about just plugging and playing some 6x8's, followed by a replacement (soon) of the deck, and maybe wiring at that point.

Now, I'm torn with considering the use of 6.5's, and maybe components, with a sub for bass.

I'm also open to advice on a double din deck. I was hoping to install a unit that I could later add the components to for cell phone connection and GPS.

Apparently, I've talked myself into a longer project!

Any recommendations on any specifics? I'm looking for more of a budget build - possibly upto $200/speaker pair (preferred 100) and $400-500 for the deck.

I would start shopping around for a Head unit you like, lots of them now have bluetooth for phones already in them. Probably a good idea to do 6X9s up front, in truth you only need one sub to make a small truck like a ranger sound good.

 

yup you'll be under budget on the head unit unless you get some real nice nav, and even then maybe not.

i had a single 10" pushing 300 watts and it was honestly plenty. could even get by with a single 8 or something, i'd just do a ten and a custom box to one side, upgrade the speakers, and get a nice $100-200 deck. maybe even amp the speakers.

I like the idea of the single 10 - I may even go with 2 10s in the back.

If I'm going to run the sub(s) in the back, wouldn't I be better served with 6.5s in the front? Maybe a component set up?

I have had a couple DD in my truck both kenwoods first was a DDx6019 that I added bT and NAV too. It was a nice setup but limited to what you could do with it but the BT was great and the NAV system worked real well.
It was stolen so bought a new Kenwood DDX714 still use the same NAV KNA-G510 better graphics with the new head unit but the built-in BT sucked it sound like c#@p at the other end and then died could just be a problem with the unit I bought and not the model it's self. I should get it fixed but the idea of going with out the system is just to much to bear.

Good luck shop around my original sys. is in my sig and total price with me installing it was just a little under 1100.

 

Single 10 sounds great, its what i have, but albeit i spent a little money on mine. (Rockford Fosgate) i modded up my doors to fit the 6x9's up front in the doors, and left the stock 5X8's in back, i'd say it makes a bit of a diffrence.

I think I might just slap in some 6x8s to start, probably a budget pair - maybe the punches I linked...

Then start hunting for a DD with nav capabilities.

Should I consider rewiring the truck when I get the new deck?

 

If you're talking about the speaker wire, the factory speaker wires are plenty. I would only run new wire if your going to power the speakers with an external amp.
16awg wire is plenty, even for very high powered speakers.

If you don't have to have the high dollar head-unit, you can build a much better sounding system on the same budget. just a thought, depends on what interests you more.
