You're talking about Dynamat Extreme, I think. I used that stuff to line the hatch of my old Eclipse. Worked great, but expensive.
Plus, the smell reminds me of roofing tar. The stuff I used is a think plastic polymer, that smells more like plastic than tar. Gives a good headrush the first few weeks, if you don't air it out right.

The peel and seal didn't smell any more than the dynamat did. I really don't recall any difference in smell between the two. I did two Mustangs that summer, a friends little brothers and my Cobra. I used the dynamat on his and peel and seal on mine. They appeared to be the same stuff, only difference is peel and seal is only about 12 inches wide.

Peel n Seal is mainly used to seal rooftops, so you'll find it at Lowes and occasionally Home Depot. If it's not there, call a local builder's supply place.
