ok so i was driving along today, and all of a sudden i smell this awful smell. i soon realized that it was my sub that was smelling when it stopped working... so i turn around and see that there is smoke coming out of my port.... "ooooo ****!" so i turned my radio off and got home and pulled it out... the sub was very hot, but didn't look burnt...
whats going on? did i burn it up? is it done for? help! thanks

 

If you know alot about subs or someone who does they may be able to fix it, but IMO the sub is done and you may want to look at another one. Maybe wait a while and try hooking it up again and see what happens, but be careful not to hurt the amp, but check your amp and settings and make sure you are not over powering your sub

subs are pretty much something that I would replace. I'd be careful of the amp...as they are quite expensive to replace.

 

I'd say its done too. I've messed up a couple subs by trying to push them harder than the amp could send clean signal, and burnt the coils. The last sub that got screwed up was simply overpowered by at least 150 watts. It just froze up. So, I got a new amp and sub that puts out alot more power so I wont have to push them hard.

 

well i went out and looked and the light on the amp isnt coming on... sh*t... and so now i think ive f*ck up both sub and amp

i havent had this one for very long... and i cant justify buying a new one right now... i dont know what im going to do!

 

Did you check power, maybe a fuse blew in your amp or your power fuse blew like its supposed to, so the amp may be fine, but get a new sub

 

dont freak out about the amp its protected by fuses

look at the fuses (inline and one in the amp) If its nice n black in the middle.. its toast.

alright.. well ill check my fuses.. im feeling a lot better knowing that i shouldnt need a new amp... i can live with buying another sub, seeing how i got a good deal on the last one i can find another good deal... $100 for a memphis 12" and ported box was what i got the last one for.. ill just look for the same sub...

 

So that is why there are so many fuses on those things

ya i normally listen to rap but right now im listening to some of my rock since i have hardly any bass... anyone ever heard of american bass? my buddy was telling me that they hit pretty hard and i might be getting hooked up with another good deal.. we'll see

 

Not sure what you are talking about on american bass, but i will tell you Rock music can hit hard, if you have a box designed for it and subs/amp set up to play it, it will really kick-thats how i have my system set up and when i put in some AC/DC it willl hit notes that will hit harder than any rap song can touch, only differance is that you can understand the wording in a rock song and the bass matches instead of a nonstop boooooooooooooom!!!

im not saying that rock doesn't hit hard, because i know it does... but it sounds better than rap does without bass... i like both and can't wait til i get my system back up and running so that i can bump hard again... i guess American Bass is a type of sub... I had never heard of it myself, but i guess they are decent.. and if i can get a good deal ill see how they are...

 

I would look on ebay......I got a kicker amp and sub off there, and the msrp for both totaled up is about $800, and I got both off ebay for about $350 brand new. (different sellers)

 

Ok referring to subs, yes american bass is a name brand sub and from what ive heard is supposedly one of the best out there, buddy of mine competes with american bass subs-2 10" subs i do believe and does very well

 

alrighty, well my amp is fine, just needed a new fuse, and i got a new sub:pioneer champion series..here the thing, the guy that sold it to me told me to hook it up in parallel... i had my other one hook up in series and it was fine, but i keep getting an "over current" light on the amp... what does this mean? when i get this light the sub stops. it starts again if i turn off the H/U and back on with lower volume. I haven't had the chance to change it to series and try it.

im pretty sure the amp does best at 4 ohms... at least thats what i remember reading...

 

For dual voice coil subs, you can run them series or parallel...
Depending on the ohms of each coil, you change how hard your amp works to power the load (speaker).

For instance: a dual 4ohm sub wired in series would yield an 8ohm load, while the same dual 4ohm sub wired in parallel presents your amp with a 2ohm load.
The lower the ohms, the harder the amp works, but the more power is produced. The higher the ohms the amp sees, the less the amp has to work to power the load, but the amp will produce less power.

I've never been a big fan of those 2ohm, 1ohm or 1/2ohm setups. I like running a 4ohm sub off a stereo amp in mono for an easy 4ohm load. No overheating problems, no shutting down, no blown fuses (at least for me).

Sure, you can double or triple the power of your amp with lower ohm loads, but you can run into the issue you have, which is: the amp doesn't like that increased load & it goes into protection mode.

I've seen (and the folks here probably have too) a vehicle with 20 or more speakers powered by a single amp (old school Rockford Fosgate Power 1000). The amp would probably be pushing 4000 watts peak. Sure it would run hot, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to hit 160dB.

I'd try wiring the voice coils back in series (like you had before) & see if the amp shuts down. If everything is fine, you've found the problem... you amp just doesn't like to run with a low impedance load.

buggman's got it right. That link you posted doesn't really help because they make that sub with dual 2 and dual 4 ohm coils.

my sub has the 4 ohm coils. i rewired it in series and its no longer shutting down when a hard line hits, in other words, that current overload light isn't coming on anymore.

 

well ok i was listening to it, adjusted and tuned it some and i def. think it sounds a lot better when its hooked up in parallel rather than series. I think im going to change it back and adjust the amp and try to find a medium between the too... series: sound quality goes down, wont go into safe mode when hard bass hits, parralle: sounds better, but have to keep the amp turned down...
between parrallel and series would u notice an increase in temperature from the amp? or does it just depend how loud you had been playing it?
